Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release

Pittsburgh-In the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds lost to the Michigan Bucks (PDL) in the final minute of regulation. The Bucks captain, Stew Givens converted from the penalty stipe to lift the visiting side into the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. The Bucks will play host to the Chicago Fire next Tuesday, May 29th at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, Michigan.

From the opening whistle, the pace of the game was extremely fast. The Bucks were direct and looked to turn the Riverhounds defense while the home side wanted to build through the midfield.

The Bucks high pressure caused problems for the Riverhounds and created quality opportunities in the first half. Each of the Bucks opportunities were denied by Riverhounds goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap, seeing the teams enter the break knotted 0-0.

Both sides would threaten the goal multiple times in the second half, but outstanding goalkeeping by Gilstrap of the Riverhounds and Adam Grinwas of the Bucks would stifle each opportunity.

The deciding moment of the game came with just seconds left in regulation. The Bucks traveled down the left flank and slotted a pass towards the near post. Turning inside to receive the pass, Anthony Grant made a quick touch back to the outside and was brought down by Louie Rolko. The referee wasted no time to award the Bucks a penalty kick. Stepping up to take the kick, Givens struck a right-footed shot into the back of the net to provide the Bucks with the game-winning tally.
