Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks added a former Boston Red Sox farmhand to the roster today.
The RiverHawks signed right-hander Curt Borland, a 25-year-old pitcher with one-year status in the Frontier League. To make room on the roster, Rockford released pitcher Gary Gallegos.
Borland began the season with the Fullerton Flyers of the Golden League. He was 0-1 with no saves and an 11.00 earned-run average in five appearances, two as a starter, before his release.
Boston signed Borland as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Colorado in 2003. He was 6-0 with a save and an 0.83 ERA in 13 appearances at Sarasota of the Rookie class Gulf Coast League that year. The Red Sox released him from their Class A August affiliate last May and he finished the season with Elmira of the independent Northeast League.
The RiverHawks hit the road for three in Richmond, beginning at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday. They're back home for nine games, beginning with Axberg Heating and Air/Continental Coupons Koozie Night at 7:05 p.m. Friday. The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
