RiverHawks rally for 9-5 win

CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks rallied in the late innings for a 9-5 win on Sunday at Windy City.

The RiverHawks scored twice in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth to break a 5-5 tie and earn their third win in their last four games.

Jason James led off the seventh with a double to right field off reliever Michael Scudero. Matt Greener followed with a single to left field. Windy City left fielder Quentin Luquette misplayed the ball and allowed James to score the go-ahead run. Greener reached second base on the error, advanced to third on a grounder and scored on Luis Parache's sacrifice fly.

The RiverHawks picked up insurance runs in the eighth on a RBI single by Dave Cooper and a RBI double by Jake Eigsti.

Windy City scored twice in the third inning and twice in the fourth for an early 5-2 lead, but the damage was mitigated on outs at home plate in each inning. Cooper, the second baseman, got Devin Shepherd on a fielder's choice at the plate in the third. In the fourth, on a fly to left from Luquette, James threw out Chase Porch at home.

Cooper was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a steal. He doubled in the tying run off Scudero (1-1) in the sixth.

Rockford starter Brett Scarpetta (6-3) gave up five runs, three earned, on 10 hits and three walks over six innings, but got the win.

The RiverHawks have a chance to sweep the three-game series. The finale is scheduled for 10:05 a.m. Monday and will be aired live on ESPN 1380.

The RiverHawks' next home game is 7:05 p.m. Tuesday against Southern Illinois. Petco sponsors Dog Days of Summer. Fans are invited to bring their pooch to the park. It's also a Thompson's Transmissions Kids Eat Free Night.
