
RiverHawks' rally falls short in 11-6 loss

MARION, Ill. - For the third straight game, the Rockford RiverHawks dug themselves a seven-run hole. This time, they were unable to climb back out.
The Southern Illinois Miners scored three times in the fourth inning to take the lead and four more in the fifth en route to an 11-6 win on Tuesday at Rent One Park. Matt Fields hit a game-tying home run in the second inning and singled in the go-ahead run in the fourth.
The RiverHawks trailed, 9-2, after five innings. They rallied from seven-run deficits for a pair of wins over the weekend against Normal, 10-9 on Saturday and 9-7 on Sunday.
On Tuesday, Rockford had an early 2-0 lead. Freddy Parejo led off the game with a home run to left field. In the second inning, Carlos Dominguez doubled in a run.
Fields hit a two-run homer to left in the second and gave the Miners a 3-2 lead with a single to left in the fourth. Rockford starter Alex Szymanski struck out six, but walked a season-high five and gave up eight hits in the loss. Szymanski (5-4) was out a batter before Nate Hall hit a two-on, two-out homer to left off Brad Allen in the fifth.
Southern Illinois starter Brendon Malkowski (8-3) gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings and got the win.
The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday and will be aired live on ESPN 1380.
