ZION, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks' first season in the Northern League ended with a 5-4, 10-inning loss Monday at Lake County.
Cody Strait's two-run single off moonlighting shortstop Jono Brooks gave the expansion Fielders a walkoff win in the finale of their first season in pro baseball.
Rockford rookies Bud Long and Franco Valdes each hit home runs. Long hit a leadoff homer to left field in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. Valdes led off the top of the 10th inning with his third homer of the series.
In the bottom of the 10th, Brooks, who started the game in center field, moved to the mound. Josh Short led off with a double and Juan Valdes singled him to third base. After a steal and an intentional walk, Strait lined the winning single to right field.
Lake County reliever Marco Gonzalez (4-4) won in relief.
