February 3, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Richmond RiverDogs News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Tag Team combo of Dan Vandermeer and brother Bill combined for 3 points, two assists (Dan), the game-tying goal (Bill) plus the bonus, a shootout goal (Bill) as the Richmond RiverDogs defeat the Danbury Trashers 3-2 in a shootout before 3,921 at the Richmond Coliseum. The win put the RiverDogs at 20-21-4, 44 points, good for 3rd place in the Eastern Division. The win was also the last coaching win for General Manager/Head Coach Robbie S. Nichols as coach of the Richmond RiverDogs, as Nichols heads to Hoffman Estates, IL where he will help start up the United Hockey League expansion franchise.
The Trashers got on the board first at 16:44 on a goal from Donny Grover. Joey Bastien scored on the power play midway during the second. The defensive struggle continued until Jean Michel Daoust converted at 6:48 to give Danbury a 2-1 lead. At 12:12, the Vandermeer boys combined on a nifty goal with Bill deeking Danbury netminder Jayme Platt. The game would end but not without some fireworks as Matt Goody made mincemeat out of Carlyle Lewis in their second bout of the night with just three ticks of the clock left. In the shootout, Mike Oliveira and Bill Vandermeer got goals while Doug Groenestege blanked the Trashers on all four of their attempts.
The RiverDogs will wrap up the homestand tomorrow night when they play host to the Roanoke Valley Vipers at 7:35 pm. It will also be the debut for 27 year old Kris Waltze as "Waltzie" will guide the RiverDogs for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs in quest of Richmond's first Colonial Cup.
