Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON - The Charleston RiverDogs will commence their 2008 home schedule against the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League's (SAL) Southern Division on Monday, April 7, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, which is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
Savannah will be making its first of four visits to "The Joe" this season for a four-game series, and will be followed by the Rome Braves for another four-game set to conclude the opening eight-game homestand.
Opening Night will feature a magnet schedule giveaway presented by Nucor Steel and a post-game fireworks spectacular, which should light up the Charleston sky and provide a wonderful backdrop to commemorate the start of the 2008 season.
Last season's Opening Day game set the single-game attendance record at Riley Park, as 8,426 fans watched the RiverDogs defeat the Greenville Drive, 1-0 in 10 innings, on April 5.
The RiverDogs also set the single-season attendance mark last season with 284,718 fans clicking the turnstiles at "The Joe."
On the mound for the RiverDogs will be 20-year old Zach McAllister, who is in his third professional season, and first with Charleston. The 6'6", 230 lb. right-hander has a 9-8 career record with a 4.49 ERA, following an excellent high school career in which he was named Illinois First-Team All-State as a senior. The Chillicothe, Ill. native spent the 2007 season in short-season Class-A Staten Island, recording a 4-6 record with a 5.17 ERA, striking out 75 batters in 71.1 innings pitched.
Charleston begins its fourth season as the Class-A affiliate of the 26-time World Series Champion New York Yankees. Manager Torre Tyson returns for his second season as the team's skipper after leading the squad to its second-straight 78-62 mark and fifth consecutive winning season overall.
Tickets for Opening Day and all 70 home games may be purchased at the Riley Park box office, or by calling (843) 577-DOGS (3647), or through the team's website at www.riverdogs.com. Ticket prices range from $5 General Admission to $10 Box Seats.
