Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, GA- Tonight's season opener for the Columbus Catfish and Savannah Sand Gnats was marked by outstanding pitching performances from the starting pitchers, Columbus' Alex Cobb and Savannah's Michael Antonini. Cobb, one of the Tampa Bay Ray's top 30 prospects entering 2008, gave up a single to Greg Veloz to lead off the game; but then recovered to strike out the side. Cobb went on to pitch five and two-thirds innings of four hit and two-run baseball; only allowing one earned run via a double to left-center from Francisco Pena scoring Jose Jimenez.
Cobb was relieved in the sixth by his bullpen after allowing an unearned run following shortstop Omar Luna's booted ground ball which permitted Mathew Bouchard to reach, quickly followed up by a Jimenez double to drive in the run. Columbus' bullpen shut out the Sand Gnats for the remaining three and a third innings. However, the Catfish's collective pitching effort was overshadowed by Michael Antonini's six innings of no-hit baseball. Antonini struck-out four and only allowed two base-runners, one via an error by his shortstop Bouchard and the other a walk to Emeel Salem in the third inning. Jacobo Neguilis took over for the Sand Gnats in the seventh and promptly gave up the Catfish's first hit in the game to Greg Sexton. Any hope of a rally was quickly dashed, however, as Neguilis set down the next three hitters to end the inning. Neguilis' effort was followed up by a save performance from Nick Waechter, as he closed out the game with six straight outs.
