Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Three Charleston pitchers combined on a one-hitter and Jesus Montero hit a clutch two-run single as the RiverDogs stopped the Asheville Tourists, 3-1, in South Atlantic League action Sunday afternoon in front of 4,011 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs pull within one-half game of the Tourists for first-place in the Southern Division standings with a key game against Asheville slated for Monday night. The winner will exit the four-game series at the top of the division with no more head-to-head meetings remaining in the half.

Charleston improves to 28-15 on the season while Asheville slips to 29-15.

RiverDogs starter Noel Castillo (4-2) went six full innings and allowed one hit while striking out eight Tourists and walking four. He became the fifth consecutive Charleston starter not to allow an earned run in his outing, a stretch that reaches back to Tuesday night against Greenville and now stretches 29 consecutive innings.

Chase Vacek pitched the seventh and eighth innings and allowed Asheville's lone run, an unearned tally in the eighth. Jonathan Ortiz, fewer than 24 hours after blowing a save on Saturday, threw an uneventful ninth to earn his league-high-matching 12th save.

Castillo's no-hit bid was broken up in the fourth inning on Darin Holcomb's one out single.

Montero went 2-4 on the afternoon, scored a run and drove home two as Charleston recorded only four hits. Taylor Holiday and Carmen Angelini accounted for the other two.

Charleston first scored a run in the fourth inning against Asheville starter Connor Graham (4-3). Montero led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a groundout. Then after Holiday struck out, Angelini singled Montero home with two away for the hosts' first run.

The RiverDogs extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth against Graham. With one out, Justin Snyder reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second when Braedyn Pruitt drew a walk. Both were pushed up on a wild pitch and both scored on Montero's two-run single to center on a 3-2 pitch.

Asheville scored an unearned run in the eighth after Warren Schaeffer led off with a walk. Following a flyout, Brian Aguailar hit a hard grounder to shortstop Angelini who booted the ball and then threw wildly to first, leaving runners on second and third. With one away, Everth Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Schaeffer.

Graham pitched 4.2 innings and allowed all three runs on three hits while walking four.

The finale of this four-game block is set for Monday at 7:05 p.m. Charleston will starter righty Jason Stephens (1-0, 1.08 ERA), while Asheville counters with righty Bruce Billings (2-3, 6.25 ERA). The game will conclude an eight-game homestand.
