GreenJackets Record Lopsided Win Against Columbus

Columbus, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (25-18) recorded their biggest win of the season with a 13-2 victory over the Columbus Catfish (18-25) Sunday afternoon. Angel Villalona and Francisco Peguero each homered and drove in four runs while Joe Paterson picked up his team leading fifth win of the season.

The GreenJackets plated six runs in the top of the ninth inning and sent all nine batters up to bat to take a 13-2 lead. Villalona got the scoring started in the ninth with a solo home run, his fifth of the season. James Simmons connected for a two-run double and Francisco Peguero capped off the scoring with a three run homer, his first of the season.

Paterson (5-1) worked 2.1 innings in relief and allowed one run on one hit, a solo home run in the sixth inning to Mike McCormick. Paterson retired the final six batters in a row he faced.

Augusta broke the scoreless tie in the third inning plating two runs for a 2-0 lead. Andrew Davis scored on a fielding error from Catfish pitcher Glen Gibson on a bunt by Shane Jordan. Peguero made it 2-0 with an RBI ground out scoring Simmons.

The GreenJackets increased the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning when Ramon Corona scored on a fielding error from third baseman Greg Sexton.

GreenJackets starter Madison Bumgarner recorded the no-decision working 4.2 innings and allowed one run on six hits. Bumgarner also walked one and struck out five.

The Catfish got as close as 3-1 in the fourth inning when Reid Fronk drove in a run with a two-out RBI single.

Augusta plated two runs in the sixth inning when Thomas Neal scored on an RBI double from Villalona and then Ramon Corona scored from third on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead.

Villalona increased the lead to 7-2 in the top of the seventh with a two-run single.

The GreenJackets look for the series win on Monday night with right-hander T.J. Brewer (2-2, 3.64) heading to the mound. The Catfish counter with right-hander Josh Johnson (1-4, 6.32). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes:

The GreenJackets are 15-6 on the road this season and 5-1 on the current road trip.

Augusta is 13-3 in the month of May.

The GreenJackets matched a season high with 16 hits.

Augusta improved to a season high seven games over the .500 mark.

The GreenJackets scored a season high six times in the ninth inning.
