Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, GA - The Columbus Catfish (18-25) fell to the Augusta GreenJackets (25-18) by a final score of 13-2 Sunday afternoon.
The GreenJackets got on the board first in the top of the 3rd when a Shane Jordan bunt single was thrown into the tarp tube by Glenn Gibson, resulting in Andrew Davis scoring. Augusta would get 1 more in the inning when Francisco Peguero grounded out to Omar Luna to score James Simmons. In the 4th, an error by Greg Sexton allowed Ramon Corona to score to give Augusta a 3-0 lead.
Columbus would answer back in the bottom of the 4th when Reid Fronk his a 2 out single to score Greg Sexton, who had doubled.
The 6th featured scoring by both teams. For Augusta, Angel Villalona smoked a double to score Thomas Neal and than an Austin Hinkle wild pitch allowed Corona to score. Mike McCormick had the answer for Columbus, as he homered off of Joe Paterson to make it a 5-2 game. However, Augusta added 2 more in the 7th when Villalona singled over Henry Wrigley's head driving in Nick Noonan and Neal. In the 9th, the GreenJackets added 6 runs. Villalona homered over the left field wall, Simmons hit a 2-run double and Peguero hit a deep 3-run home run off of the advertisements in left field.
Columbus was led offensively by Greg Sexton, who went 3-4 with a run and a double. Glenn Gibson took his 6th loss of the season after throwing 5 innings and allowed 7 hits, 5 runs, 3 earned runs and walked 3 batters without striking any out.
17 year old Angel Villalona, one of the top prospects in baseball according to Baseball America, paced Augusta with a 4-5 day at the dish with 4 runs batted in and a home run. Augusta had 4 other players with at least 2 hits: Shane Jordan (3-6), Francisco Peguero (2-6 with 4 runs batted in), Nick Noonan (2-6) and Andrew Davis (2-5 with 2 runs). Joe Paterson took the win, his 2nd of the year, after throwing 2 and 1/3 innings and allowed only 1 run.
The series concludes tomorrow at Golden Park with a pitching match up of T.J. Brewer against Joshua Johnson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
