RICHMOND, VA - Adam Edinger scored a goal and added the game winner in the shootout as the Motor City Mechanics sweep the two game set 4-3 in front of a noisy, sign-waving Richmond Coliseum crowd of 5,929. The Mechanics got on the board first on a Vlad Serov goal at 5:47. The lead did not last long as the RiverDogs Warren Cooper tied the game with a 7:26 marker. Adam Edinger put the Mechanics up 2-1 at 11:07. For the next period and a half, both teams traded shots, hard body checks and with the goalies, Doug Groenestege for the RiverDogs and Rod Branch for Motor City, making big save after big save, the huge crowd was on the edge of their seats. At 12:04, John DiPace put a wrap around past goaltender Branch to tie the contest at 2-2. But with 3:52 left in the contest, Peter Szabo hushed the loud Coliseum crowd with a goal to put the Mechanics up 3-2. But with 2:33 left, referee Rich Leonard whistled off Mike Burgoyne for holding and David Herring for interference giving the RiverDogs a 5-3 man advantage. General Manager/Head Coach Robbie Nichols called a time-out with just over two minutes left and pulled Groenestege for a sixth attacker and a three-man advantage. The RiverDogs won the draw, peppered the Mechanics net and with 1:47 left, Mike Oliveira sent the huge crowd into an insane frenzy with a power play goal to send the game into a shootout. Adam Edinger got the only goal in the shootout giving the Mechanics the victory. As the crowd filed out of the Coliseum, an enthusiastic fan was heard saying, "This was my first ever hockey game and I loved it! I am buying tickets for the next game." The fan will not have to wait too long as the RiverDogs will play host to their arch-rival Roanoke Valley Vipers on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. With the shootout loss, the RiverDogs fall to 18-21-4, 40 points and third in the Eastern Division, five points ahead of fourth place Elmira who got smoked tonight 6-1 in Danbury.
