Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Charleston, SC -- Jose Tabata, C.J. Henry and Marcos Vechionacci each collected three of Charleston's 14 hits to help the RiverDogs snap a nine-game losing skid with a 9-3 victory over the Columbus Catfish in South Atlantic League action Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Tabata homered and drove in three, Henry scored twice and plated a run, while Vechionacci recorded one tally and three RBI as Charleston won for the first time since May 22.

With the win, the RiverDogs are back at .500 overall with a 27-27 record, while the Catfish fell to 28-26. It was only Charleston's second win of the season against Columbus in ten tries.

The RiverDogs scored first on Tabata's fifth long ball of the season, a two-run line drive to right field against Columbus starter Cory Wade in the third inning. The 17-year-old would later conclude the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth, giving him six runs batted in during the first two games of the series.

Columbus cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth, scoring a run when Sergio Pedroza walked with the bases loaded against reliever Jim Conroy (2-3). Conroy then fanned clean up batter Russ Mitchell to get out of the frame without further damage.

Charleston put the game away in the late innings, scoring twice in the sixth against Wade, then four in the seventh and another in the eighth against reliever Jordan Pratt.

Vechionacci's run-scoring triple highlighted the sixth inning rally, and he later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tim Battle.

After Pratt walked consecutive batters with one out in the seventh, Ben Jones, Henry and Vechionacci followed with consecutive RBI hits, the last of which plated a pair, to put the RiverDogs ahead 8-1.

Charleston starter Garrett Patterson allowed only one run on four hits in 4.2 innings of work, coming up one out shy of qualifying for the victory which went to Conroy.

Mario Holmann reached base three times and scored twice, swiping four bases in the process, while Jones also recorded a pair of hits in addition to his run batted in..

Jason Mooneyham and Juan Apodaca led the Catfish attack with two hits apiece. Wade took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in six innings pitched.

Game three of the series is scheduled for Friday night beginning at 7:05 pm, with Charleston righty Jason Stephens (2-1, 2.16 ERA) slated to start against Columbus right-hander James McDonald (1-2, 3.86).
