
Ford leads Power to 5-1 victory

(Eastlake, OH)--West Virginia's Darren Ford hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI Thursday night, as the West Virginia Power defeated the Lake County Captains 5-1 at Classic Park.
Three Power pitchers combined on a three-hitter against the Captains (24-29). Starter David Welch (2-3) worked the first six innings, giving up three hits and the Captains' only run on a solo homer by Omar Casillas in the third.
Matt Kretzschmar tossed two scoreless and hitless innings and Joe Thatcher one, to finish the game.
Ford, who entered the game hitting .284, clubbed a two-run homer in the third inning off Albert Vargas (4-6) to give the Power a 3-0 lead. It was Ford's third of the season.
After the Captains pulled to within 3-1 on the Casillas homer, West Virginia (28-23) scored two more in the fourth on an RBI single by Michael Brantley and an RBI groundout by Ford.
It was the fourth straight win for West Virginia, who pulled to within three games of first place, thanks to Greensboro's 2-0 win at Delmarva.
Vargas left after giving up five runs on 11 hits in five innings. Cody Bunkelman and Matt Loberg each pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Lake County.
