SAVANNAH, Ga. - Tim Pahuta and Brian Peacock each hit home runs, but it was not enough as the Sand Gnats fell 6-3 to the first-place Rome Braves Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The loss snaps Savannah's five-game winning streak.
Gene Yost was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Ricky Shefka, Yader Peralta and Don Levinski combined to throw 3.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
The Gnats struck first in the contest, breaking a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third when Ofilio Castro lined a one-out single into right field and then scored all the way from first on a double down the left-field line off the bat of Edgardo Baez.
After falling behind 3-1 in the fourth, Tim Pahuta brought Savannah back within one run with a homer over the right-field wall. The long ball was Pahuta's first of the season with the Gnats.
Clinging to a one-run lead, Rome grabbed insurance in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on three hits, including an RBI double off the bat of Kala Ka'aihue.
Savannah did not go quietly in the ninth as Brian Peacock blasted a home run to deep left field for his team-leading eighth of the year, setting the score at the 6-3 final.
For the Gnats, Edgardo Baez went 4-for-4 in the game, extending his team-best hitting streak to 12 games. Four hits in a game sets a new season high for Baez.
The Sand Gnats and Braves play Game 2 of the series Friday at 7:05 p.m. Savannah will send David Trahan to the hill to face Rome's Jairo Cuevas. Friday is Georgia Lottery Night with a Papa John's pizza eating contest and post-game fireworks.
