Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Ben Jones led a 19-hit Charleston attack and Wilkins Arias and Paul Patterson combined to allow only three hits, as the RiverDogs romped the Columbus Catfish, 9-1, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
The RiverDogs improved their home record to 47-21 on the night the organization set an all-time attendance city record. With the win, Charleston improves to 39-29 in the second half and 77-61 overall while the Catfish fall to 34-34 in the second half and 71-77 overall.
Catfish starter Dave Horlacher (2-4) suffered the loss as he went 6.0 innings allowing a pair of runs on nine base hits. The RiverDogs got to Horlacher in the fourth inning as Josue Calzado knocked a two out single. Calzado came home to score as the next batter Eduardo Nunez sent a ball to right field that bounced in front of Columbus right fielder Chris Jensen for an RBI single.
Charleston added the second run of the ball game in the fifth as Austin Jackson scored on an infield single by Jones.
Arias (8-7) worked in to the sixth and gave way to Patterson who closed out the ballgame earning his first save of the season. The left-hander Arias, now likely finished his work this season, left the game holding a 28 inning consecutive scoreless streak dating back five starts.
The RiverDogs exploded for six runs on eight hits in the seventh inning. Columbus reliever Nate Hochgesang started the inning by allowing the first seven RiverDogs batters reach base on six base hits and a hit-by-pitch.
In total during the seventh, Charleston sent 11 batters to the plate and Jones and catcher Joe Muich each notched two-run doubles to make the score 8-0.
The RiverDogs added a final run in the eighth on an RBI triple from Jones. Jones, who went 3-for-6 with a single, double, triple and four RBI, is now tied for second all-time on the career Charleston professional baseball RBI list with 161 during his two seasons as a RiverDog.
Jones is currently tied with Wes Bankston (2003-04) for both the career home run (35) and career RBI mark.
Columbus added their lone run in the ninth inning when Lucas May led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch. May came home to score a sacrifice fly to center by David Sutherland.
Eduardo Nunez went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI for Charleston, and James Cooper went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
The two teams are scheduled to meet in game three of the series on Sunday at 4:05 pm. The RiverDogs will send right-hander Bryan Villalona (8-10, 3.99 ERA) against Catfish right-hander Arismendy Castillo (8-4, 4.50 ERA).
