Charleston RiverDogs News Release
(Charleston-SC)- Nate Dion hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to help lift the RiverDogs to a 3-2 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws Sunday at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
It was Charleston's second win of the season in its final at bat. The RiverDogs (24-18) have won two of the first three games of the series with Lakewood (15-28) with the series finale Monday.
BlueClaws outfielder Andre Marshall led off the ballgame with a homerun off RiverDogs starter Mike Prochaska. After the homer, Prochaska settled down to allow two hits and no runs during the rest of his seven-inning outing.
The RiverDogs evened things up in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs and Ryan Riley at second base, Jason Pridie delivered the first of two hits Sunday, a single to right-field. Riley was held at third and when the throw from right skipped away from Lakewood catcher Casey Martinez, Pridie, sensing an opportunity to put his team on the scoreboard, took off for second base. Riley came home to score on the ensuing rundown, tying the game at one
Pridie's heads-up baserunning continued in the eighth. At second base with one out and Lakewood leading 2-1, BlueClaws reliever Victor Menocal (1-3) uncorked a wild pitch which catcher Martinez couldn't find. Pridie raced around third and scored standing, evening things up once again.
Charleston put the first two men on in the ninth before Elijah Dukes sacrified the runners to second and third. After Riley was hit by a pitch, Dion lifted a fly ball to medium range left-centerfield, deep enough to score Shawn Riggans from third with the winning run.
Joe Yarbrough (3-3) picked up the win after two innings of relief.
2002 Philadelphia Phillies first round draft pick Cole Hamels made his second career start and went four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out five.
The final game of the series is Monday at Riley Park. Scott Autrey (5-1) will start for Charleston. Zach Segovia (1-5) will be on the hill for Lakewood.
Game time is scheduled for 10:35 am on Charleston County Educational Day presented by Smucker's Uncrustables and Rick Hendrick Imports.
