RiverDogs Bullpen Puts up All Zeroes Again in Shutout Win

April 17, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - One run was all the Charleston RiverDogs needed as they recorded their first shutout win of the season, 1-0, over the West Virginia Power on Tuesday at Joe Riley Park in front of a crowd of 3,063.

The Dogs (6-6) scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the first after West Virginia (6-6) starting pitcher Sergio Cubilete (0-2) had to be removed two batters in when he was struck by a Wilkerman Garcia line drive. Later in the inning, shortstop Oswaldo Cabrera scored on a Steven Sensley RBI groundout for Charleston's 11th first inning run of the season. That run came with Evan Piechota on the hill, but the run was charged to the injured Cubilete who took the loss without recording an out.

The Holy City sent righty Garrett Whitlock (1-1) to the mound, who threw five scoreless innings which included three hits, two walks and five strikeouts. He stranded the bases loaded in the first and left two more on in the second before retiring the final 12 men he faced.

Whitlock was relieved by Brian Trieglaff, who continued Charleston's bullpen dominance with three shutout innings and four 'K's. Righty Matt Wivinis took over for the ninth and held the one-run lead, claiming his South Atlantic League-high fourth save of the season. With four more zeroes for the Charleston pen, relievers have now surrendered just two earned runs in 45 innings, good for an astounding 0.40 ERA.

In the victory, Frederick Cuevas went 0-3, snapping his eight-game hitting streak. Had Cuevas collected a knock, he would have been in a tie for the SAL's longest hitting streaks so far this season. Cabrera collected two-hits, including the RiverDogs' only extra-base knock.

Trieglaff has now struck out 12 batters without a walk in 8 2/3 innings to start the season out of the bullpen.

Ballpark Fun

The RiverDogs showcased the best in food and entertainment that Charleston has to offer with the season's first "Live and Local Tuesday." A restaurant pop-up from Chef Jeffrey Stoneburger was held in Murray's Mezzanine, providing nontraditional Japanese and Korean-inspired dishes from 2Nixons. Taking over the public address announcing was Christian Senger, AKA "The Holy City Sinner," and fans could also sample local fare at the local farmer's market on the concourse while listening to live music in partnership with 105.5 The Bridge.

Upcoming

The getaway game of this three-game series between the Dogs and Power will start at 11:05 a.m. on Wednesday for "Education Day," as RiverDogs right-hander Glenn Otto (1-1, 3.48) will be countered by West Virginia southpaw Domingo Robles (0-1, 7.71). The broadcast is available online exclusively via streaming audio at riverdogs.com, the RiverDogs TuneIn radio app, and on MiLB.tv.

RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are now available for the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com/tickets.
