CHARLESTON, SC - Two big early innings by the Charleston offense and a solid effort from starter Sean Black pushed the Charleston RiverDogs past the Greenville Drive, 10-6, in front of 3,358 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Wednesday night.

With the win Charleston improves to 16-17, 57-55 overall and ends a five-game losing streak to Greenville. With the loss, Greenville falls to 21-12, 57-46 overall, and drops consecutive games for just the third time in the second half.

The RiverDogs lit the scoreboard in a big way in the bottom of the second with a six-hit, five-run frame. Neil Medchill's RBI single down the left field line brought Rob Lyerly home from second to give the RiverDogs the 1-0 lead. Lyerly opened the frame knocking his team-leading 29th double to left, which also ranks third in the circuit.

DeAngelo Mack ripped a triple to right, scoring Medchill from first to push the lead to 2-0. Emerson Landoni's RBI single through the hole at shortstop plated Mack, boosting the lead to 3-0.

With Slade Heathcott at the plate, Landoni stole second and crossed home on Heathcott's seventh double of the year, 4-0. Heathcott scored the final run of the inning on J.R. Murphy's single to center, giving Charleston a 5-0 lead going into the third.

Not content with a five-run lead over the Southern Division-leading Drive, the RiverDogs kept the pedal to the floor with a four-hit, four-run bottom of the third.

After Lyerly hit an infield single to open the frame, Luke Murton and Medchill hit back-to-back singles to load the bases for Mack, who responded by hammering off his second multi-base hit of the night, a double to right, scoring Lyerly and Murton, Charleston 7-0.

Heathcott's single to right-centerfield scored Medchill and Mack, for his second and third RBI of the night, giving the RiverDogs a 9-0 lead going into the fourth.

Manny Rivera (3-9) takes the loss for the Drive after giving up nine hits and nine earned runs in just 2.0 innings of work.

Greenville cut into the Charleston lead in the top of the seventh, loading the bases against Black. Michael Almanzar broke up the shutout bid when his sac fly scored Zach Gentile from third, 9-1 Charleston. Former Citadel standout and Charleston native Chris McGuiness crossed home on a Gabriel Tatis wild pitch, 9-2 RiverDogs.

Reynaldo Ramirez followed with a two-run blast over the left field wall cut the Charleston lead to 9-4 going into the bottom of the seventh.

Black (5-7) earned his first victory since May 26 - a victory over Greenville -- after surrendering four hits and three earned runs, with seven fans in 6.0 innings on the mound.

Kelvin Castro's RBI triple, his fourth of the year, added some insurance to the Charleston lead, giving the RiverDogs a 10-4 advantage going into the eighth.

Greenville refused to go down without a fight, as McGuiness and Ronald Bermudez smashed back-to-back solo homers over the left and right field walls, respectively, against Kelvin Perez, before the RiverDogs closed the game out with a final of 10-6.

Seven different RiverDogs recorded two hits, while Heathcott and Mack each contributed three RBI, as Charleston defeated the Drive at The Joe for the first time since July 3, 2009.

Game two of this four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Thursday, with Charleston sending right-hander Mike Solbach (2-3, 3.84) to the hill, while Greenville counters with right-hander Ryan Pressly (4-6, 3.79).
