Missouri River Otters News Release
Jason Tapp provided a scintillating performance in net as the Missouri River Otters overwhelmed the Quad City Mallards in a 3-1 victory Friday night at the Family Arena.
Quad City scored the only goal in the first period, and it came on the power play. Marty Standish fed a pass to Terry Hollinger at the right point, and the Mallards defenseman ripped a slap-shot between the pads of Tapp to put his team on the board. Mallards goaltender Robert Gherson stopped all 14 shots he faced in the opening period.
The River Otters sent 22 shots at Gherson in the second period, and finally dented the twine with 90 seconds remaining in the period. Mark Odut skated up the right wing and fed a perfect cross-ice pass to Barrie Moore. In turn, Moore found a wide-open Lars Pettersen in front of the net, and he rammed the puck behind Gherson to tie the game at one.
Missouri took the lead twelve minutes into the final period on an unbelievable individual effort from Ryan Johnson. The speedy center picked up the puck in the neutral zone, sped into the Mallards zone on the left wing, and hammered a slap-shot top-shelf to give the River Otters the lead. Mark Odut added an empty-netter, and the River Otters won by a score of 3-1. Tapp made 37 saves for the victory, while Gherson made 38 saves in defeat.
The River Otters will host the Fort Wayne Komets Saturday night at the Family Arena. The puck drops at 7:35, and all the action can be heard on KSLQ 104.5 FM and the B2 Webcast at www.riverotters.com.
