Sacramento River Cats News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Sacramento River Cats cooled off the red-hot Tacoma Rainiers in game one of the PCL Pacific Conference Championship Series, defeating the Rainiers, 8-2, at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.
Sacramento's offense got things going early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning with the help of a 2-run home run from top prospect Chris Carter. Sacramento would add two more in the 2nd, proving all that Cats starter Chris Gissell would need. Gissell, who joined the team on August 30th after spending most of the season pitching in Taiwan, allowed just 2 runs in 6.0 innings of work and earned the victory for the Cats.
Four Sacramento relievers combined to hold the lead for Gissell as Carter (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Matt Carson (3-for-5, 2 2B, RBI) and Tommy Everidge (2-for-5, 3 RBI) paced a balanced River Cats' offensive attack that featured five different players driving in at least one run.
Tacoma, who rallied from 7.5 games back with 17 games to play to qualify for the postseason, stranded 8 base-runners on the night.
The two teams will square off in game two on Thursday night in Tacoma as Sacramento will look to take a 2-0 series lead before heading home to Raley Field on Friday.
