River Cats Sweep Sox in Doubleheader

The Colorado Spring Sky Sox were beaten two times on a day where the fans at Security Service Field witnessed the first double-header of the season on Sunday afternoon.

After Friday night's suspended game the Sky Sox resumed the contest against the River Cats at 11:00 AM on Sunday. The game resumed play in the third inning where the Sky Sox jumped on Reno right off the start when Carlos Gonzalez drove in two runs on a double to right field off relief pitcher James Simmons, giving the Sky Sox a 2-1 lead. Simmons would go on to see the Sox score another run in the bottom of the fifth making the score 3-1 Sky Sox. Simmons lasted four innings allowing four hits, three runs, two earned, and four strikeouts.

Sacramento made its comeback in the sixth where third baseman Yung-Chi Chen belted a two-run homer to right off Jason Hirsh tying the game up at three all. On the day, Hirsh threw six innings giving up two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Neither team was able to score the rest of the way forcing the game into extra innings where the Sky Sox pitcher Randy Flores (0-2) broke down in the tenth. Flores surrendered three runs, two earned, giving the River Cats a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the inning where the Sky Sox were unable to produce any runs losing by a final of 6-3.

Game two of the double header proved to be no different for the Sky Sox as they lost the game by a score of 7-4 in front of 2,665 fans.

The Sky Sox and River Cats were able to match one anther through the first two innings. The River Cats got things started in the top of the first inning when first baseman Daric Barton smoked a triple to center driving in two runs off Sky Sox pitcher Franklin Nunez (0-2) giving the River Cats a 2-0 lead. The Sky Sox answered right back by way of a Matt Miller two-run double to right field off starting pitcher Chad Rieneke, tying the game up at two all. Third baseman Jeff Baisley crossed the plate in the second making the score 3-2 Sacramento only to see Eric Young Jr. drive in Christian Colonel in the bottom of the inning to tie the game back up at 3-3.

Sacramento would take control of the game the rest of the way . The River Cats went on to score a run in the top of the fourth giving them a 4-3 lead and would blow up in the sixth adding three more insurance runs. Left fielder Joel Galarraga and shortstop Adrian Cardenas, who were both called up during the series, each had an RBI in the sixth.

The Sky Sox weren't able to muster a run until do-or-die time in the bottom of the ninth when Eric Young Jr. got a two-out triple and was driven in by Mike McCoy on the next at-bat. Carlos Gonzalez would follow only to fly out to right fielder Sean Doolittle ending the game at 7-4.

The Sky Sox will travel to Portland where they will have RH Josh Fogg (2-0, 5.75) take on RH Walter Silva (NR). Start time for the game is 7:05 PM PT.
