July 10, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Davenport, IA. - The Burlington Bees (3-12,33-51) had difficulty finding any offensive momentum, as the Quad Cities River Bandits (7-8,47-38) got a 2-1 victory. Peter Solomon (6-1) won his sixth game of the season for another great outing in relief for the River Bandits. Solomon went four innings, allowed one unearned run, gave up just two hits, one walk, and struck out six. Oliver Ortega (3-5) didn't look bad in last night's game, but still only managed three innings, allowed one run on two hits, walked four, and struck out five.

Taylor gives Quad Cities the first run

Ortega started the first pair of innings off pretty well, but ran into problems right away in the third, walking Seth Beer and giving up a single to Miguelangel Sierra to start the inning. After Logan Mattix grounded out for a force-out at second and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Colton Shaver drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Chandler Taylor then sent a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Beer and give Quad Cities a 1-0 lead.

River Bandits add another in the fourth

Quad Cities found themselves with the bases loaded again in the fourth on singles from Marty Costes and Alfredo Angarita, and a walk from Michael Papierski. Beer then grounded into a force out at second, but Costes was able to score on the play to make it 2-0.

Bees capitalize on a River Bandits Error

After a lead-off single from Zane Gurwitz to start the fifth, Jeyson Sanchez reached on a fielding error by David Hensley at third, putting runners on second and third. Burlington then got the bases loaded with no outs after Leonardo Rivas drew a walk. Orlando Martinez ended up getting Burlington a run on a sacrifice fly, making the score 2-1. However, the River Bandits only allowed one baserunner for the remainder of the game, giving them a 2-1 victory.

Bees can't capitalize

Burlington had opportunities to put runs on the board, finishing with five hits and drawing three walks, but could only manage one run in the game. The Bees were just 1-10 with runners in scoring position and struck out 18 times as a team. Franklin Torres led the second of with a double and Spencer Griffin drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. However, the next three hitters struck out to end the inning. Rivas drew a one out walk in the third, but Hunter and Martinez both struck out. Torres and Griffin both singled to start the fourth, but Torres ended up getting picked off at second, and the next two hitters struck out. Burlington had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth, but only managed one run. Garcia hit a one out double in the sixth, but the next two hitters stuck out.

Burlington had at least one strikeout in every single inning and had three strikeouts in three innings. Both Hunter and Wenson struck out in every at bat, and Garcia and Gurwitz each struck out three times too.

River Bandits have great night on the mound

Along with another great night from last night's winning pitcher Solomon, Quad Cities got great games from starter Parker Mushinski, and closer Carlos Sanabria. Mushinski went the first four innings, allowed no runs, three hits, two walks, and got nine of his twelve outs to be strikeouts. Sanabria earned his eighth save of the season for his inning of work, and also struck out the side in the ninth.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will look to have more success in tomorrow night's game, as they will take on Quad Cities again tomorrow night at 6:35 pm. Burlington has not yet announced a starting pitcher, but they would most likely go with Mitchell Traver. Quad Cities is expected to start Cesar Rosado, who is having a really solid season so far, going 4-2 with a 4.10 ERA in nine starts and 16 total appearances. Rosado will look to do better against Burlington this go around. He pitched against the Bees back on April 20th, but only threw two thirds innings and allowed four runs.
