Madero Gets Hit Hard in Blowout Loss to Peoria

July 10, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Peoria, Ill. - It was another rough game for the Burlington Bees (3-11,33-50) starting pitching, as the Peoria Chiefs (8-5,47-36) took game three of the series easily, winning 13-4. Paul Balestrieri (5-3) won his fifth game in his seventh relief appearance, going four and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits, one walk, and throwing for five strikeouts. Luis Madero (2-7) had one of his worst starts of the season last night, throwing only two and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs, six earned on six hits, surrendering four walks, and finishing with only three strikeouts.

Peoria scores early, but Bees respond in the second

Madero was looking good right away, retiring the first two batters without a problem. Elehuris Montero managed to draw a two out walk, and he advanced all the way to third after a single from Yariel Gonzalez. Madero then gave Peoria a run on a wild pitch, to give them a 1-0 lead in the first.

Peoria didn't enjoy their 1-0 lead for long, as Spencer Griffin led the second inning off with his second triple of the season. Keinner Pina brought Griffin in on a single, while being down in the count 1-2 to tie the game at 1-1.

Chiefs do what we did to them

In Tuesday's game, the score was close, until Burlington pulled ahead with a five run inning. Tonight, Peoria got some revenge by doing that to us in the third. Rayder Ascanio and Nick Plummer started the inning off with back to back walks, and Irving Lopez loaded the bases with a single to center. Montero then made Madero pay with a single to right to drive in two runs and give Peoria a 3-1 lead.

After a strikeout from Gonzalez, Julio Rodriguez hit his first triple of the season to deep center to drive in a pair of runs, and Bryce Denton followed that up with a single to left for another run to make it 6-1 Peoria. Madero was taken out after walking J.R. Davis and Eduardo Del Rosario came into relief. Peoria managed to strike for one more run, after Kevin Williams Jr committed an error in left, allowing Denton to score and make the score 7-1.

Martinez drives in one in the fifth

Orlando Martinez has been a huge help for the Bees offense. In four games, Martinez has gotten seven hits in 17 at bats, while drawing two walks. Martinez drove in his first run for the Bees last night on a two out single to score Connor Fitzsimons, making the score 7-2.

Chiefs ice things with late runs

Plummer led the bottom of the sixth off with his fifth homerun of the season, giving Peoria a six run lead again. Lopez got his 16th double of the season in the next at bat and advanced him to third on a single to center. Michael Santos then took over on the mound for the Bees, but gave up a single to Gonzalez right away, giving Peoria another run and a 9-2 lead. Burlington did get a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Fitzsimons to cut the lead to 9-3 for Peoria.

After the annual seventh inning stretch, Peoria was right back to scoring more runs. Wood Myers led the bottom half of the seventh off with first double as a Chief, and Davis scored him right after on a single to left to make the score 10-3. Davis also advanced to second on a throwing error by Martinez. Peoria then loaded the bases on walks from Plummer and Lopez and Santos threw his third consecutive to Montero, giving Peoria another run and a 11-3 lead. Jeyson Sanchez then made his second pitching appearance of the season but gave up a hit to Gonzalez on his second pitch to give Peoria a 12-3 lead. Rodriguez capped the inning off with a sacrifice fly and Peoria pretty much had control, now up 13-3.

Fitzsimons drives in his second run

Playing for pride late in the game, Burlington did manage a run in the ninth. Griffin hit a single to right for his second hit of the game, and Fitzsimons drove him in on a single to left for his third hit of the game, making the score 13-4 Peoria. Luis Madero just hasn't been the same pitcher that Burlington saw in the first half. In his three second half starts, Madero has thrown only 12 innings, allowed 13 runs on 23 hits, allowed six walks, and has thrown ten strikeouts. Wednesday's 2.2 innings was the fewest innings Madero had thrown in a start this season. His four walks and six earned runs were also game highs for him too. Madero's ERA is now at 4.26 and opponents have a .283 average against him.

Another solid night of offense

Despite a rough night from the pitching staff, the Bees offense still put up some good numbers on offense. Burlington got their fourth straight game with double digit hits and finished this game with four extra base hits. They finished 4-12 with runners in scoring position and left only six men on base. Fitzsimons was the star of the lineup last night, going 3-4 with two RBI's. The Bees did have another high night of strikeouts though, going down on strikes 14 times.

Montero and Rodriguez continue to dominate Bees pitching

Elehuris Montero and Julio Rodriguez have had a lot of success against the Bees so far in this series. Rodriguez is 6-14 with a run scored and has driven in seven runs in the past three games. Montero has batted 6-12, scored four times, drawn three walks, and has six RBI's. Burlington will need to shut these two down in game four if they want to shut down the Chiefs offense.

Looking Ahead

Burlington and Peoria will conclude their series tomorrow night at 7pm. Burlington is expected to start Denny Brady, who is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in four starts. Brady got beat up in his last start, giving up seven runs and failing to record an out. Peoria is expected to start Alvaro Seijas who is 2-4 with a 5.03 ERA in 13 starts.
