River Bandits Cruise Through Burlington's Lineup for Shutout Win

July 10, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Davenport, IA. - The Burlington Bees (4-13,34-52) had another struggling night of finding their offensive spark, as they suffered a 5-0 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits (8-9,48-39). Leovanny Rodriguez (4-1) had another great start for the River Bandits, going five and two thirds innings, allowing just three hits, one walk, and reaching double digit strikeouts at ten. Jose Soriano (0-3) had another quick exit, going just one and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on three hits, throwing four walks, and three strikeouts.

River Bandits jump on Soriano in the second

Soriano used a couple strikeouts to get out of a one out bases loaded jam in the first inning but didn't have the same luck in the second. Jonathan Lacroix got the inning started with a one out single and Michael Papierski advanced him to second after drawing a walk. Seth Beer continued his recent success, hitting a single to center to score Lacroix and give the River Bandits a 1-0 lead. Papierski advanced to third on the single and later scored after Soriano hit Marty Costes with a pitch while the bases were loaded to make it 2-0.

River Bandits add runs in the third and fifth

Quad Cities loaded the bases again in the third on a walk from Chandler Taylor, a single from David Hensley, and another walk from Papierski. Alfredo Angarita then hit a ground ball and was thrown out at first, but Taylor scored on the ground out to give the River Bandits a three run advantage.

Papierski started the fifth off by drawing his third walk of the evening, and Quad Cities again loaded the bases on Beer's second single and a walk drawn by Miguelangel Sierra. Costes then drove in his second run of the game, and once again didn't need to swing the bat to do it, because Burlington gave Quad Cities their second run on a bases loaded walk to make it 4-0.

Lacroix's triple adds a run in the eighth

After Hensley drew a one out walk in the eighth, Lacroix lined a triple into right field for his first of the season, to give the River Bandits a 5-0 lead. Burlington had a great night on the mound in the strikeout category, throwing 15. However, the pitchers surrender twelve total walks. In the four innings where the River Bandits scored, Burlington threw two walks and hit a batter in the second, threw two walks in the third, three in the fifth, and one in the eighth. Combined with the River Bandits nine hits, they finished the night with 21 total baserunners. Although Burlington was able to pitch out of a lot of jams with strikeouts, so the score could have been a lot worse than it was.

Seth Beer continues to dominate

Seth Beer has started off his professional baseball career off pretty well and has had some very good success against the Bees. Houston's 2018 first round pick out of Clemson has had himself a great three games as he had another great night at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI and also drew a walk. Overall Beer is 6-11 and has driven in three runs in the series so far. Beer is now hitting .447, has driven in nine runs, and has 17 hits in just eleven games with the River Bandits. The Astros have to be pretty happy with how their first round pick has done so far.

Looking Ahead

Bees will conclude their series against the River Bandits tomorrow at 6:35 pm, as Burlington will look to try to split the series. Burlington has not yet announced an expected starter, but it would probably be Denny Brady, since he has not pitched since last Saturday. If not Brady, Burlington could go with Madero too. Quad Cities is expected to start Jairo Solis, who will be looking for his first win, as he is 0-3 with a 2.84 ERA in six starts. Solis threw two innings against Burlington back on June 16th, but struggled throwing five walks, and allowed a unearned run.
