Bees Score Six Unanswered Runs to Steal a Win against the River Bandits

July 10, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Davenport, IA. - It was looking like another lack of offense day for the Burlington Bees (4-12,34-51), as they only managed two hits through six innings of offense. However, the offense came to life in the seventh, and the Bees ended up scoring three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits (7-9,47-39) 6-4. Anfernee Benitez (3-0) picked up his third victory overall and his second victory in the past four days, going three innings, allowing one run on one hit, surrendering three walks, but striking out four. Humberto Castellanos (1-2) suffered the loss after throwing two innings, allowing three runs, two earned on three hits, and throwing three strikeouts.

River Bandits score three in the fifth

Other than Mitchell Traver's ejection in the third inning, there wasn't much action during the first four innings. Quad Cities finally got runs on the board with a big three run fifth. Scott Schreiber led the inning off with a single and got to second after Ruben Castro drew a walk. Marty Costes then got things started with his first triple with Quad Cities and driving in his second and third RBI to give the River Bandits a 2-0 lead. Seth Beer then followed that up with a single to right to make it 3-0. Ruben Castro added a run in the sixth on a single to left to give the River Bandits a 4-0.

Bees make it a game in the seventh

Burlington finally got some men on base in the seventh after Spencer Griffin got hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Keinner Pina slapped a single to right. After Castro allowed a passed ball, Griffin headed to third, but Castro tried throwing Griffin out at third and the ball went past Colton Shaver at third, allowing Griffin to score and get the Bees a run. With two outs, Zane Gurwitz reached on an infield single that allowed Pina scored, and Leonardo Rivas followed that up with a triple to right to make the score 4-3 Quad Cities.

Bees get the rally caps on

Pina led the ninth inning off with his third hit of the game and Connor Fitzsimons reached on an error by Shaver at third, sending Pina to third to put runners at the corners with one out. The River Bandits put in Tanner Duncan to try and get the save, but that plan didn't work because Zane hit his third hit of the game for a triple to drive in two runs and give the Bees a 5-4 lead.

After Rivas drew a walk, Orlando Martinez hit a ground ball to Duncan and Duncan threw Rivas out at second, but Martinez beat the throw to first which let Gurwitz score and give the Bees an insurance run, making the score 6-4. Quad Cities did get a runner to second after Miguelangel Sierra got a two out single, but Logan Mattix struck out swinging for the third out, giving Burlington the 6-4 win.

Bullpen holds their ground after rough start

Max Herrmann got rushed into the game after Traver's ejection, but Burlington didn't get the game they wanted from him. Herrmann pitched just one and a third inning, allowed three runs on four hits, allowing one walk, and striking out two. Andrew Wantz was able to clean up Herrmann's mess in the fifth with three strikeouts for an inning of work. Benitez then got Burlington through three innings, and James Ziemba earned his sixth save, after throwing the ninth and striking out two hitters.

Gurwitz has a game to remember

Zane Gurwitz had a huge spark in the nine spot for the Bees tonight, going 2-4 with three RBI's and he hit his second triple of the season. Last night was the first time Gurwitz finished with two hits in a game since May 24th, and his three RBI's is a season high in a game for him. Burlington also got big production again from Keinner Pina, who finished the game 3-4, and Leonardo Rivas, who finished 1-4 with a walk, and an RBI.

Looking Ahead

Burlington will continue the series against Quad Cities tomorrow for a 5:15 matchup. Burlington has not yet announced a starting pitcher for tomorrow's game, but my guess would be Jose Soriano, since he pitched the day after Traver last week. The River Bandits are expected to start Leovanny Rodriguez, who is 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA in seven starts for the River Bandits this season.
