NEW YORK, Jan. 22, 2011 - The Washington Wizards signed guard Mustafa Shakur of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers for the third GATORADE Call-Up of the 2010-11 NBA Development League season. Shakur's call-up increases the number of current NBA players with NBA D-League experience, including players currently on assignment to their NBA D-League affiliates, to 81.
In 23 games (all starts) this season with the Vipers, Shakur averaged 16.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists, helping to lead Rio Grande Valley to a 16-7 record. Shakur, who earned a GATORADE Call-Up last season from the Tulsa 66ers to the Oklahoma City Thunder, has scored in double figures in all but two of his games this season, and has averaged 19.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.2 steals in his last 10 games.
Shakur (6-4, 195) is a fourth-year pro out of Arizona, where he averaged 10.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 131 games over a four-year career. His 670 total assists rank third in Wildcats history and his 1,318 career points ranks 22nd.
Shakur is expected to join the Wizards today, and will be available when the team hosts the Boston Celtics at Verizon Center.
