Arkansas RimRockers News Release
Little Rock, Arkansas - The Arkansas RimRockers(11-11) suffered their first loss to the Fort Worth Flyers (12-7) in a 93-88 loss that came down to the final minutes of the game.
Clay Tucker led the contest with a 21 point effort and James Lang had his second double-double of the season (13 points, 13 rebounds), but it wasn't enough to hold off a fired up Fort Worth team looking to avenge their previous 3 losses to the RimRockers.
"Tonight was not what I had in mind and I think the team feels the same way," Head Coach Joe Harge said.
"We played good basketball, but we gave them room to score and it came down to us not making key shots in the final part of the game. It was a hard loss."
The first quarter of the game was riddled with personal fouls and turnovers, making it difficult for either team to score many fast break points or run a thorough offense. The RimRockers allowed the flyers to score seven points off of six RimRockers fouls and both teams had six turnovers. The Flyers put back 4 second-chance points and grabbed 10 boards early. Myron Allen came off the RimRockers bench to lead the team with 8 points, but at the end of the first quarter, the RimRockers were trailing the Flyers 22-26.
The RimRockers got off to a quick start in the second quarter, outscoring the Flyers 21-17, but the lead the Fort Worth had built in the first quarter was too great for the RimRockers to take a lead. Both teams went into halftime tied at 43. The entire third and fourth quarters were physical contests as the two teams combined for a final total of 83 free-throws attempts. The Flyers were never able to put a double figure distance between themselves and the RimRockers due largely in part to the RimRockers' ability to convert 14 fast break points when the timing was right. The RimRockers watched their chance to tie the score in the final minutes of the game disappear as they missed on three 3-point opportunities and fouled the Flyers, allowing them to score their final 5 points in free-thows and clinch the road victory.
Although the RimRockers lost the battle, the team put up big numbers. In addition to Tucker's 21 points, Brian Jackson and James Lang added 13, and Donta Smith and Myron Allen each contributed 10 points. Kareem Reid once again led both teams in assists with 8, and the RimRockers out-rebounded the Flyers 49-40. Fort Worth's leaders were Rawle Marshall with 15 points, Ime Udoka and Martell Webster each adding 13 points and Deji Akindele tipped in 10 points.
The RimRockers will have the opportunity to prevent the Flyers from making a sweep when they take the court against them Sunday at 3 p.m.
