CALGARY- In a battle for first place in the NLL, the Calgary Roughnecks (4-3) lost a 9-8 heartbreaker to the Toronto Rock in overtime on Saturday night.
Down one late with just over one minute left in the fourth, the Roughnecks had one final chance to tie the game, and made the most of it. Rookie Curtis Dickson whipped an underhand shot on goalie Bob Watson that found the back of the net.
Only 15 seconds later, Dickson rings one of the post.
But four and half minutes into the extra frame, rookie Aaron Pascas sniped a shot on goalie Mike Poulin to give the Rock the win.
The Roughnecks started strong, scoring four goals in the first frame, including three in 50 seconds. Mike Carnegie scored a pair with Dickson and Jeff Shattler each adding singles. The Rock replied with Ryan Sharp and Garrett Billings.
Rock forward Stephan Leblanc opened the scoring in the second quarter to cut the lead to one. However goals from Peter McFeteridge and Jon Harnett pushed the Riggers lead to three at the half.
Then, the Roughnecks stopped scoring.
In the third quarter, it was all Toronto as they scored four in the stanza to take their first lead since the 8-minute mark of the first quarter.
Colin Doyle expanded the lead for the Rock eight minutes into the fourth. It was thought Dickson closed the leader two minutes later but after a challenge flag, it was deemed no goal.
Shattler scored his second of the game late in the fourth to set up Dickson's tying goal.
Both teams scored twice on the powerplay, five opportunites for the âNecks compared to four for the Rock.
Mike Poulin made 51 saves for the Roughnecks while Bob Watson turned away 26 shots for the Rock.
The Rock are back at home next weekend against the Rochester Knighthawks while the Roughnecks will renew the Battle of Alberta on next Sunday in Edmonton.
