Frisco RoughRiders News Release
The Frisco RoughRiders won their fifth game in their last six with a 10-1 victory over the San Antonio Missions Tuesday night at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. Frisco starter Cody Bradford set a new season high with six runs driven in, while shortstop Jax Biggers led the offense with a career-high four hits. Bradford (6-5) walked no batters in his six shutout innings, striking out three batters. The southpaw starter threw 68 pitches with 51 of them strikes for a strike percentage of 75%. The Riders scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning for the second consecutive night and paced an early 8-0 lead through the fourth inning. Second baseman Justin Foscue finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs in Tuesday's win, his fifth runs driven in this series. The Riders took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first on San Antonio starter Bran- don Komar (0-3) beginning with a Kellen Strahm leadoff single and a Dustin Harris double. Foscue singled to the outfield to score Strahm and advance Harris to third for the first run of the game. With runners at the corners, Blaine Crim grounded into a double play to score Harris from third, giving the Riders a 2-0 lead. Frisco exploded for a six-run fourth inning, featuring three consecutive run-scoring hits from Biggers, third baseman Trey Hair and catcher Matt Whatley. With the bases loaded, Harris scored a run on an RBI groundout to set up Foscue for a two-run single, ending the inning with an 8-0 RoughRiders lead. Bradford's night ended after six innings and turned it over to reliever Seth Nordlin for an inning of scoreless pitching. Fellow righty Kevin Gowdy struck out his first batter faced in the bottom of the eighth inning before walking two, making way for Riders pitcher Josh Smith. Missions center fielder Thomas Milone doubled with two on base to score the first Missions run of the night and of the series. The run scored marked the first run allowed by Frisco pitching since the fourth inning on July 2nd, 30 innings of scoreless baseball. The RoughRiders pushed two more runs across in the top of the ninth as Foscue singled for his third hit of the night. Foscue advanced to third on a throwing error to second after lineout from Crim when San Antonio attempted a throw to second that ran out of play.
Designated hitter Sandro Fabian plated Foscue on a base hit, and Biggers doubled down the left field line later in the inning for his fourth hit of the game and end the scoring, 10-1.
OFFENSE APLENTY: Over the last three games, the Riders have outscored their opponents 33-1 and have scored double-digit runs in three-straight games. Over team's last three games, the Riders are tied for the most runs and are second in batting average (.355) in Minor League Baseball. During the same stretch, the Riders have the best ERA in the minors (0.33) and are one of two teams to have allowed just one run (Dunedin). This is the second time this season that the Riders have scored double-digit runs in three-straight games (June 9-11 at Amarillo, scoring 10, 10 and 16 runs over three games).
OWEN IS WHITE HOT: RoughRiders starter Owen White had an incredible start last week, throwing 5.1 innings without allowing a hit while ceding just one base runner on a walk. He struck out seven before leaving with a minor left ankle injury. For his start, he won Texas League Pitcher of the Week, becoming the first RoughRiders pitcher to take home the award. In his two starts with Frisco, White is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA.
MISSION POSSIBLE: The Riders have dominated the Missions over their last two seasons. This season, they are 11-3 against San Antonio and 8-0 at Nelson Wolff Stadium, but including last season, Frisco is 24-8 against the Padres affiliate. Dating back to mid-June of 2018, the Riders are 36-16 against San Antonio in their last 52 games.
ANOTHER BLANKING: After a shutout win on Monday, the Riders threw back-to-back shutouts and three in their last five games. It was the first time since April of 2019 that the RoughRiders had thrown back-to-back shutouts. Until allowing the first run of the series in the eighth inning on Tuesday, the Riders set a new franchise record with 30-consecutive scoreless innings streak (24 innings in April of 2019 was the previous franchise record).
Over the last five games, the Riders have allowed just four runs (0.80 ERA) and in the second half of play - in the last eight games - Frisco has a 1.50 ERA, which is the best in all of Minor League Baseball.
J.P. STANDS FOR JUST PERFORM: Riders outfielder J.P. Martinez has been lethal at the plate this season for the Riders. After cracking his ninth home run on Friday, Martinez now has an active-team-high .902 OPS while leading the team in OBP (.411), runs (52), triples (5) walks (41) and stolen bases (25). His OBP is also ninth in the league while he is second in triples and stolen bases.
JONNY ON THE SPOT: Riders infielder Jonathan Ornelas has been on fire at the plate all season long, but recently, he has been even better. Over his last 20 games, Ornelas is hitting .349 (30-for-86)/.387/.488 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs, 13 RBIs and nine runs. This season, he leads the Riders with 32 multi-hit games and 14 games with three or more hits. Ornelas is tied for the leading active hitter in the Texas League with a .333 batting average while he is first in hits (96). He is tied for first in hits in MiLB with Darius Hill (Triple-A Iowa, CHC) and Will Columbus (Triple-A Columbus, CLE).
IT'S ABOUT STRAHM TIME: Riders outfielder Kellen Strahm started off slowly, but he has started to turn his offensive game around. Since May 27th, over his last 30 games, Strahm is hitting .373 (38-for-102)/.471/.500 with four doubles, three home runs, 19 walks, 25 runs and nine RBIs. In that stretch, Strahm has raised his average from .148 to .273 and his OPS from .528 to .771. The Eugene, Oregon native is riding an 23-game on-base streak (the longest streak on the Riders this season), in which he is hitting .353/.444/.506 with 14 walks. The streak is the longest active in Double-A. The on-base streak is one game away from tying Isiah Kiner-Falefa (2016) for the 10th-longest streak in franchise history. In 2012, Jurickson Profar had the longest streak in franchise history at 50 games.
THREE IS A MAGIC NUMBER: Frisco has played a lot of close games this season and when scoring or allowing three runs, the Riders have seen a pretty predictable result. This season, the Riders are 4-22 when scoring three runs or fewer and 23-3 when allowing three runs or fewer.
