
Riders secure assistant coaches

Saskatchewan Roughrider Head Coach Danny Barrett announced today that assistant coaches Alex Smith, Ron Estay, and Tim Kearse will remain with the club for the upcoming season. Barrett, along with defensive coordinator Richie Hall and offensive coordinator Marcel Bellefeuille have already renewed their contracts. The only departure from last year's coaching staff is quarterback's coach Sam Garza who has joined the NFL's Dallas Cowboys as a scout.
Barrett stated "I am very pleased to retain five of our coaches for the upcoming season. The continuity and experience that these men bring to the field are invaluable. These coaches are committed to this community and are determined to make this organization one of the best in the CFL. "

ALEX SMITH: LINEBACKERS/ SPECIAL TEAMS COACH
2005 will be Alex Smith's ninth season with the Roughriders...he will be coaching linebackers and will also coordinate the club's special team units...also key member of Club's CFL College Draft Team...heavily involved in organizing draft material and player evaluations...originally joined the Roughriders' coaching staff in May 1997...spent first two seasons coaching Rider linebackers...a Level Two Certified National Coach....offers Roughrider offence 34 years of coaching experience...before joining Green and White on a full time basis in 1997, Smith gained valuable CFL experience as a Roughrider Guest Coach in 1995 and 1996...prior to joining the Roughriders, Smith spent five seasons with the Regina Rams of the PJFL as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach....during coaching stint with the Rams, won three National Championships...for his coaching efforts, Smith has been honored with a Distinguished Coaching Award of Merit from the Regina High Schools and the Saskatchewan Roughrider Club Award for Recognition of Service to Amateur Football in Saskatchewan...coached high school football at W.F. Johnson, Thom, Balfour and Scott Collegiates before moving to Junior ranks...during his high school coaching career, won three City Championships and a Provincial Championship...was awarded two Coach of the Year awards, along with 10 year and 20 year Coaching awards from the Regina High Schools Athletic Association...played high school football in Regina and then graduated to the Regina Rams program...Alex, his wife Kathy and children Alex, Brad and Juliann reside in Regina.
RON ESTAY-DEFENSIVE LINE COACH
Ron is entering his fifth coaching season with the green and white. He will once again be in charge of the defensive line. Won six Grey Cups with Edmonton...played in nine championship games...member of Eskimos from 1973 to 1982...named to the CFL Hall of Fame in 2003...drafted by Denver Broncos in 8th round in 1972 NFL Draft...originally signed by B.C. Lions in 1972...released and joined the Edmonton Eskimos as free agent...played 1983 and 1984 season with Washington Federals in USFL...four time Western Division all-star and two-time all-Canadian...Eskimo defensive captain from 1973 to 1976...1975 Eskimo nominee as Most Outstanding defensive lineman...CFLPA Defensive Lineman of the Year...played college career at Louisiana State University...played in 1971 East-West Shrine game...outstanding season in 1971...was first team all-American...AP and UPI second team all-American...AP and UPI second team all-American...all-Southern football team selection...first runner up Vince Lombardi award...leading tackler at LSU...LSU defensive MVP...entered LSU hall of fame in 1988...coaching career: spent 2000 season as defensive line coach at Liberty University...12 years at Evangel University...was defensive coordinator...four years as Head Coach at Christian Life Academy...spent one year coaching at Jackson State high school...player-coach with Washington Federals in 1984...born December 22, 1948.
TIM KEARSE: RECEIVERS COACH
Ffith season coaching in Saskatchewan...will coach Roughrider pass catchers...was guest coach with Roughriders during 2000 training camp...spent three seasons as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach with Victoria Rebels...also an assistant coach with Balfour Redmen from 1994-1996...played in CFL and NFL...Spent 1986 season in Detroit with the Lions and 1987 with the Indianapolis Colts...originally an 11th round draft choice of the San Diego Chargers in 1983...moved to CFL in 1983 with B.C. Lions...traded to Saskatchewan in 1983 with Ken Hinton for Saskatchewan's number one draft choice...played with Green and White from 1983-84 and in 1988...Roughrider stats: 34 receptions for 509 yards and two touchdowns...also chipped in 26 punt returns for 326 yards and two touchdowns...spent college career at San Jose State...two-time all-American...career stats: 152 receptions (school record) for 2,188 yards and 16 touchdowns...also feared kick returner...born October 24, 1959 in York, PA ...daughter Tiffany lives in Regina.
