June 4, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Frisco RoughRiders rallied for the game's final four runs, hanging on for an exciting 4-3 win over the Springfield Cardinals on Sunday at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, TX.
The loss gives the Cards just two wins in their first seven games of the current 11-game road trip. The Cards will take Monday off and then travel to Wichita to open up a four-game set against the Wranglers on Tuesday night.
Juan Richardson's three-run homer in the first inning was the only offensive highlight of the day for Springfield. After a two-out hit by Cody Haerther and a walk to Rico Washington, Richardson hammered the first pitch from Frisco starter Ryan Jensen way over the left field wall. The homer was Richardson's 10th, giving Springfield a 3-0 lead.
Springfield starter Jordan Pals struggled with his control, walking one man in each of the first four innings, but didn't allow a run until the sixth. Pals allowed just one run on just four hits in five-plus innings, getting a no-decision.
Trailing 3-0, Adam Morrissey hit a solo home run, his third of the year, putting the Riders on the board at 3-1. Pals then gave up a double to Jim Fasano and was removed in favor of Rich Scalamandre. The Cardinal reliever retired the next three hitters, keeping Springfield in front 3-1.
Cory Doyne came out of the Cardinals' bullpen and struggled. Jake Blalock doubled to lead off the frame, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Kevin Richardson, Luke Grayson was robbed of a base hit by Cody Haerther, who made an amazing diving grab. On the play, Blalock scored from third, making it 3-2. Doyne (0-1) then walked Enrique Cruz, putting runners at first and second. Morrissey then followed with the game-winning hit, a double off the wall in right field. His second hit of the game chased home two runs, giving the Riders a 4-3 lead.
The Cards didn't pick up a base runner over the game's final four innings, as Jensen (2-0) worked six scoreless frames after giving up the three runs in the first. Fabio Castro and Jesse Chavez combined for the final two innings of perfect relief. Chavez picked up his third save of the year, striking out two of the three men he faced in the ninth.
Springfield (32-23), now two games behind Tulsa, heads to Wichita after a day off on Monday. Chris Lambert (4-4) will take on Junior Herndon (4-3) of the Wranglers in Tuesday's series opener. On Wednesday night, Stuart Pomeranz will be opposed by Kansas City Royals right-hander Zack Greinke, who will make his second rehab appearance for Wichita. The Cardinals return to Hammons Field after their 12-day road trip on Saturday, June 10th to face the Arkansas Travelers and Tulsa Drillers, in the final home stand of the first half. Don't forget about White Cardinals Cap Night as 5,000 fans will receive a free white Cardinals cap thanks to Coca-Cola on Saturday, June 17th. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
