Tulsa Drillers News Release
Since returning to the Tulsa Drillers everyday lineup on June 1 after recovering from a wrist injury, third baseman Ian Stewart has slumped, going 1-13. That slump ended Sunday night in Corpus Christi as Stewart went 4-6 with a home run and four runs batted in to lead the Tulsa Drillers to a 10-1 win over the Hooks and a sweep of a 3-game series. The win, combined with Springfield's 4-3 loss to Midland, gives the Drillers a 2-game lead over the Cardinals in the North Division standings with only 13 games remaining in the first-half schedule.
Stewart and Tulsa struck early in Sunday's victory. In the top of the first inning, Seth Smith reached on an error and Joe Gaetti doubled. Stewart's infield single then plated Smith with the game's first run.
The Hooks answered with Hunter Pence's run-scoring single in the bottom of the first, but it would be the only offense they would generate. After escaping the first, Tulsa starter Enmanuel Ulloa worked five scoreless innings.
The Drillers gave Ulloa a comfortable lead thanks to a 5-run second inning. Troy Tulowitzki and Smith provided run-scoring singles to put Tulsa in front 3-1. With one out and runners at first and second, Stewart belted his third home run of the year over the left field wall to increase the lead to 6-1.
Another single by Tulowitzki in the fifth scored Doug Bernier who had singled.
In the seventh, a walk to Bernier and consecutive singles by Ulloa and Tulowitzki loaded the bases. Another walk to Joe Gaetti forced in a run to make it 8-1.
The Drillers made it 10-1 in the ninth inning as Christian Colonel doubled and scored on a ground ball force out off the bat of Gaetti. A single by Joe Koshansky later in the inning plated Gaetti with the game's final run.
Ulloa improved his record to 4-2 with the win. He allowed 5 hits and the 1 run in his six innings of work. Judd Songster, Jason Burch and Alberto Arias each worked a scoreless inning to complete the victory.
Tulsa totaled 17 hits in the game. After Stewart's 4 hits, Tulowitzki and Koshansky had 3 hits each, while Bernier and Gaetti both collected 2 hits.
The Drillers have now won all 7 meetings this season with Corpus Christi.
Tulsa will now travel home to begin a 9-game homestand with Arkansas and Wichita. The stand will begin Tuesday night at Drillers Stadium with the first game of a four-game set with the Travelers. Game time on Tuesday will be 7:05PM.
