Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release

Cedar Rapids- Bryce Aneloski scored twice in regulation, Darren Rowe forced overtime with a third period power play goal and Jeff Costello converted the deciding penalty shot as the host RoughRiders came from behind to defeat the Green Bay Gamblers 5-4 in a shootout Tuesday night.

The shootout was tied at two apiece until Jeff Costello tucked the Riders' seventh penalty shot home between the pads of Green Bay goaltender Reid Ellingson to give Cedar Rapids the win. The Gamblers had twice taken the lead in the shootout- on goals from first C.J. Lee and then Mike Merrifield- only for the Riders to bounce back twice to even the score as Scott Winkler and Darren Rowe both converted for Cedar Rapids.

The Riders only forced overtime- and, eventually, the shootout- after twice erasing two goal deficits in regulation.

Mike Merrifield and C.J. Lee combined on a pair of goals to turn a 2-2 deadlock into a 4-2 Green Bay lead. Merrifield buried Lee's centering pass to make it 3-2 with just 41 seconds left in the first period; the Gamblers were shorthanded when Lee fired Merrifield's centering feed home to stretch the gap to a pair at 4:46 of the second period.

The Riders used a pair of power play goals to overcome the 4-2 Gambler lead. Aneloski's tip-in cut the gap to one at 18:51 of the second period; at 5:44 of the third period Rowe's drive from the high slot knotted the score at four.

The Riders first found themselves in a two-goal hole after the Gamblers' David Makowski opened the scoring off a goalmouth scramble at 2:07 of the first period and Mike Forney snapped the puck in from the right wing circle at 11:08 of the first. The Riders responded quickly, first narrowing margin to 2-1 when Aneloski ripped a rebound in from the high slot at 12:54 and then evening the score just one minute, twenty-five seconds later on Robin Bergman's rebound goal.
