Rider Trio Wins Weekly Awards

The Saskatchewan Roughriders claim three of the four CFL's Gibson's Finest Player of the Week Awards as defensive end Stevie Baggs is named Defensive Player of the Week; returner Jason Armstead is named Specials Teams Player of the Week; and slotback Andy Fantuz is named Canadian Player of the Week. Quarterback Darian Durant was also selected as runner-up in the Offensive Player of the Week category.

Baggs finished the thrilling overtime battle with Calgary on Saturday with seven tackles, two quarterback sacks, and one forced fumble. This is the third Gibson's Finest Defensive Player of the Week award for Baggs who was also named the Defensive Player of the Month for August. So far this season, the Florida native has tallied a CFL leading 11 quarterback sacks, 45 defensive tackles, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four special teams tackles, four pass knockdowns, four tackles for a loss and one interception.

Armstead has been solid of kick/punt returns for the Riders the last two games including on Saturday when he had five kickoff returns for 145 yards and four punt returns for 25 yards. Since rejoining the Riders in September, the Mississippi product has returned 21 kickoffs for 504 yards and 27 punt returns for 239 yards.

Fantuz had his 4th 100-yard receiving game as a Rider on Saturday in Calgary when he caught 10 passes for 149 yards including a crucial 25 yard touchdown later in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. This marks the second Gibson's Finest Canadian Player of the Week award for Fantuz who has tallied 47 catches for 676 yards and four touchdowns in ten starts this season.

The trio of Baggs, Armstead and Fantuz join teammates Mike McCullough, Luca Congi, John Chick and Chris Getzlaf as Rider weekly award winners this season.
