Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson has signed a three year contract extension with the team, the RoughRiders announced today.
Carlson has been the RoughRiders' coach since the team arrived in Cedar Rapids in 1999 and has piloted the Riders to a 218-159-38 record during his seven seasons behind the bench. After guiding the Riders to the United States Hockey League Clark Cup (playoff) title, Anderson Cup (regular season) title and East Division title in 2004-05, Carlson led the team to a second straight division championship last season.
"I'm very happy to be with the RoughRiders for the next three years," said Carlson. "I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be with this organization and to be able to work with the elite junior age players in our sport."
Carlson, who was the 2004-05 USHL Coach of the Year, has directed the Riders to six straight winning seasons and six straight Clark Cup playoff berths. Carlson's Riders are one of just two USHL teams to have reached the post-season each of the last six years and are the only club to have advanced at least as far as the Clark Cup semi-finals/East Division finals four of the last five years.
A native of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Carlson played college hockey at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing. He was a 1987 draft pick of the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins.
Carlson began his coaching career as an assistant at Lawrenceville School before returning to Lowell in 1995 to serve as an assistant at his alma mater. After helping the River Hawks to a berth in the 1996 NCAA tournament, Carlson spent another three years as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Northeastern University in Boston. He also earned a master's degree in education from N.U.
The RoughRiders will open their eighth season in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, October 7 against the Green Bay Gamblers. 2006-07 season tickets are currently available through the RoughRiders' business office (247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 15 will receive a significant discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.
Single game tickets will go on sale on a date to be determined in September.
