Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Joe Exter has been named the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' new assistant coach, the RoughRiders announced today. Exter joins the Riders after spending last season as an assistant at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts.

"We're very pleased to have Joe as a part of our program," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "He is a high caliber person who brings a tremendous passion and enthusiasm to the position, most importantly in attacking the scouting responsibilities as well as in the day-to-day coaching and working with the goaltenders."

Before entering the coaching ranks, Exter, 27, spent two years playing professionally for the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. A goaltender, Exter went 18-15-2 over the course of his professional career while turning in a 2.71 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.

Exter is a graduate of Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. The Cranston, Rhode Island, native enjoyed a standout career with the Warriors, for whom he played from 2000 through 2003. In 88 career collegiate games, Exter went 31-47-8 while posting a 3.22 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.

As a senior captain, Exter was named to the 2002-03 All Hockey East Second Team and was also named Merrimack's Most Valuable Player after going 11-16-6 with a 2.91 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. In 2000-01, Exter made the Hockey East All-Rookie team on the strength of a freshman campaign that saw him go 11-12-1 with a 3.08 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.

Exter fills the vacancy created by the departure of former assistant Scott Meyer, who left the RoughRiders earlier this summer after two years with the team.

Exter's hiring by the RoughRiders marks his return to the USHL. Exter spent the 1998-99 season with the Waterloo Black Hawks, for whom he went 2-10-0 in 14 games while turning in a 4.30 goals against average and a .868 save percentage.

The two-time defending East Division champion RoughRiders will open their eighth season in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, October 7 against the Green Bay Gamblers. 2006-07 season tickets are currently available through the RoughRiders' business office (247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 15 will receive a significant discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders.

Single game tickets will go on sale on a date to be determined in September.
