Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA. - In a match that saw three penalty shots and 14 corner kick between the two clubs, it was the Richmond Kickers who emerged with a 4-2 win over New York Red Bulls II, with midfielders George Davis IV and Eli Garner both getting a goal and an assist in Richmond's second match of the year against the newly formed USL expansion team.

It only took eight minutes for the first goal of the match to be scored, coming from Richmond midfielder Brian Ownby in the 14th minute. During the first corner kick chance for the Kickers, midfielder Owusu was able to send a quick aerial ball into the New York box, finding a leaping Ownby, who directed his header into the back of the net, pushing Richmond ahead by one.

The Red Bulls had a chance to tie the game thanks to a penalty shot opportunity awarded in the 31st minute. The shot, taken by New York forward Manolo Sanchez, was stopped by Richmond goalkeeper Ryan Taylor, who sprang back into action and stopped two more shot attempts by New York before it was cleared away by the Richmond defense.

In the closing moments of the first half, the Kickers were able to extend their lead by two thanks to goals from Richmond's Jason Yeisley and Garner. In the 37th minute, Garner was able to settle the ball and send it over to a charging Yeisley, who first-timed the ball into the back of the net, beating New York goalkeeper Santiago Castano and giving the Kickers a two-goal lead.

Less than three minutes later, Richmond midfielder George Davis IV was able to keep possession of the ball inside New York's penalty box while under challenge by several Red Bulls defenders and push a ground pass over to Garner on the right side of the box, who quickly shot the ball past Castano and allowed Richmond to carry a 3-0 lead into the locker room.

In the early goings of the second half, New York broke through and got on the score sheet thanks to the efforts of Derrick Etienne during the 48th minute. Etienne was able to break free of a challenge by Richmond defender Braeden Troyer and reach deep inside the Kickers' 18-yard box. Once there, Etienne was able to chip the ball over the hands of Richmond goalkeeper Taylor and into the goal, cutting the Kickers' lead to two.

Richmond regained their three goal lead after a penalty kick was granted to the Kickers after a New York foul inside their penalty box. Davis IV was called to take the kick and he was able to convert on a powerful shot that beat Castano to his left side, elevating the Kickers to a 4-1 lead.

Another penalty kick was awarded to New York after a handball call in the box by Richmond in the 80th minute. The shot taken by Red Bulls forward Chris Tsonis was saved by Taylor, who dove to his right to stop the attempt, but Tsonis was able to convert on the rebound and get New York back within two goals of tying the game.

Despite several corners and scoring chances in the final minutes of the second half, New York Red Bulls were unable to close the gap and Richmond carried a 4-2 lead to the final whistle, giving Richmond their sixth win of the 2015 USL season, with a record of 6-2-4.

Richmond now turns its attention to Charlotte Independence when they face the club in a Sunday afternoon match at City Stadium on Sunday, June 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
