Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - The Richmond Kickers claimed a 3-1 victory over Wilmington Hammerheads FC at Legion Stadium on Friday night in the final match of their three-game regular season series.
Richmond's Matthew Delic centte scored the first goal of the match off a low ball tipped by Wilmington goalkeeper Quillan Roberts in the 19th minute, adding to his league-leading status in goals with 14 overall during the regular season. Hammerheads midfielder Steven Miller looked to equalize with an attempted header shortly after, but lacked the power to find the back of the net and was rolled back out by Richmond goalkeeper Ryan Taylor.
The Hammerheads took several shots from outside the penalty area, one of which midfielder Paul Nicholson hit wide of the left post after receiving the ball on a near breakaway from Cody Arnoux that ended in a collision with Richmond's Luke Vercollone. Arnoux returned moments later with a shot deflected by Taylor before Richmond's Shay Spitz increased the Hammerheads' deficit to two in stoppage time off a free kick.
Kickers midfielder Samuel Asante scored his first goal of the season in the 60th minute off a Spitz assist. Minutes later, Hammerheads midfielder Drew Ruggles also scored his first goal of the season and his first for the Hammerheads in the 66th minute with a ball to the top corner of the net beyond Taylor's reach.
Friday night's victory moves the Kickers one point below league-leader Orlando City in the league standings as they aim to reclaim the title as regular season champions.
The Hammerheads will host their next match on Saturday, August 9 against the Dayton Dutch Lions for their annual 'Pink Out' match at Legion Stadium. The players will don pink jerseys during the game in support of breast cancer awareness that will be auctioned off for charity. Bidding will take place online at www.wilmingtonhammerheads.com from Monday, August 4 until Friday, August 15. Proceeds benefit the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation's Pink Ribbon Project - helping local women without insurance or other financial resources - by providing mammography screenings, diagnostics, comfort items and spiritual support.
