November 7, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Virginia Ballerz News Release

Richmond, VA. The City of Richmond, Virginia has heard whispers of a new team that would be coming to the city. Well, those whispers were true. After a summer of planning, preparation and anticipation, the city will finally have a new baby. The ABA, synonomous with the likes of Dr. J, George Gervin and others, will welcome the newest team to the league. The ABA has long been a staple in American basketball, and after renewed synergy with their mission and entertainment, the ABA has reached an agreement with VRW Investments to unveil the Generals to Richmond.

The team intends to be a group dedicated to competitive basketball, laden in family entertainment, and an organization that the city can be proud of in all aspects. To ensure this, the organization has made a concerted effort to play in the heart of the city by joining forces with the Alltel Pavilion at the VCU Stuart C. Siegel Center for its inaugural season's play. In addition, the organization has reached an agreement with the incomparable Johnny Newman, former NBA star and son of Richmond.

On November 11th, Johnny Newman, who is President of Basketball Operations, GM and Head Coach will lead the group into their first game of the season against the Baltimore Pearls. With the tenacious focus of Newman, and the strategic vision of CEO Andre Walters, the team is ready to spring into action representing a city that leans on culture, tradition and winning. Newman was quoted as saying: "We look forward to bringing professional basketball back to the city of Richmond, and hope that the city embraces an exciting, fast-paced and hard-nosed brand of basketball."

The new Richmond Generals are excited to join the ABA and intend to be woven into the Greater Richmond culture of hard work and integrity. To contact the Richmond Generals, email Anthony Walters, Special Assistant to the CEO and Executive Director in Charge of Public Relations at anthonywalters@richmondgenerals.com or visit www.abalive.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
