Ballerz move to Hampton Roads
March 24, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Virginia Ballerz News Release
Hampton, VA. Richmond Ballerz team owner Ann Iverson (mother of NBA star Allen Iverson) and George Christopher, GM, announced today that the Richmond Ballerz ABA basketball team will move to Hampton Roads, VA starting next season.
"We were extremely happy to find out that the market was available. Richmond was very kind and supportive to us and we will miss those fans very much. However, the chance to have a team in the Iverson's home town is too good an opportunity to pass up. We already have the support of several local sponsors and we'll be able to have a live broadcast of the games on the radio this year," said Christopher.
Season ticket pricing (which will be family-friendly), game site and schedules have not yet been announced, but the team plans to begin play in November. The team will keep the nickname Ballerz, but will have a formal name that represents the entire Hampton Roads area.
Team tryouts will be held in late July and August in Hampton VA. For more information, contact GM George Christopher at 804 647 0660. The team's website will have all tryout information updated not later than June 1, 2007.
According to Ms. Iverson, "I'm very excited about having my team closer to me. This gives my family, friends and me an opportunity to attend all the home games. A lot of people who wanted to attend Sixer's and Nugget's games will now have the opportunity to watch professional basketball right at home. We have a lot of things planned for this season including selling an Iverson #22 Ballerz jersey to the public. My reality show will air this Fall and my book should be released in the spring of 2008. Exciting times are ahead."
"I understand that there is a group already ready to step into Richmond," added Christopher. "Richmond is a great city and this will be a terrific rivalry." For more information, visit www.richmondballerz.com or www.abalive.com.
