Virginia Ballerz News Release
Richmond, VA. The Richmond Ballerz defeated the Newark Express Monday night 117-116. Richmond was eager for the win after losing the season opener in Newark in double overtime. Although both teams played an uneventful first half with the Ballerz down 59-50 at half time, both teams played a faster-paced more energized second half.
Herb Jones and new team member Lugman Jaaber sparked the third quarter as the Ballerz played a more aggressive game. Jaaber was put into the game with eight minutes left in the third quarter and helped to create Newark turnovers and Ballerz steals. The Ballerz took the lead in the third quarter with 5:32 left and held on to the lead until the end of the game but not without Newark challenges.
Newark closed the gap with :46 left on the clock. Maurice Carter hit a 12-foot jumper in the lane to put the Ballerz up by 3 points to 117. Jamie Sowers of the Express missed a three-point jumper with 8 seconds left. Jernavis Draughn got the rebound and laid it in at the buzzer ending the game.
Mario Taybron had a big game night shooting 8 of 16 from the field. High scorers for the Ballerz were Harold Deane 27, Mario Taybron 21, Brian DeMarco Williams 21, Maurice Carter 14 and Shawn Harris 14. There were two new Ballerz in tonight's game, Lugman Jaaber and Chris Moore, who both played for Virginia Union University.
