York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution saw a three-game overall winning streak and a five-game home winning streak come to an end as the Long Island Ducks scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to defeat York 5-2 on Tuesday evening at Santander Stadium. The Revs will go for a series win in the rubber match on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., before welcoming the Somerset Patriots to town on Thursday for the final weekend series of the regular season.
Long Island opened the scoring with unearned runs in the second and third innings, building a 2-0 lead. Leadoff singles set the table each time. In the second, it was Randy Ruiz who grounded a base hit to left. With one out, Mike Blanke hit a ground ball to third that could have resulted in an inning-ending double play, but after grabbing the ball on a bounce, third baseman Bryan Pounds had it slip out of his grasp before being able to make a throw. After the error, starter Matt Neil retired Elmer Reyes on a fly out to right, but Cody Puckett lined a two-out RBI double to left, driving in the game's first run.
Fehlandt Lentini was the table-setter in the third with a single up the middle before stealing second. Dan Lyons followed with a ground ball to short, and with Lentini breaking for third on the play, Wilson Valdez threw to third attempting to record the lead out, but with Lentini diving in, the throw deflected off Pounds' glove for an error. Lentini later scored from third on a sac fly to right by Ruiz, but it was the only run of the inning allowed by Neil who had runners at second and third before recording an out.
The Revs clawed back with two runs in the fifth inning to tie the score. Salvador Paniagua led off the inning with a single up the middle on an 0-2 pitch. After a pair of strikeouts by Ducks starter Bruce Kern, Valdez extended the inning with a single to center. That allowed Andres Perez to come to the plate, as Perez smacked a two-run double to left that skipped past left fielder Anthony Vega, tying the score at 2-2. Perez extended his league-leading RBI total to 83 with the big hit.
Neil cruised through the middle innings and needed just 87 pitches (67 strikes) to work through seven innings on the night. He allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out four in a no-decision.
The Ducks went to their bullpen early, but the unit was up to the task as four relievers combined to allow just an infield hit over 4.1 innings.
York threatened in the eighth as Perez led off with an infield single and stole second on a strikeout. Perez advanced to third on a ground out, but was stranded there as Ryan Kussmaul (5-2) struck out Telvin Nash looking to keep the game tied heading to the ninth.
Reyes sparked the ninth inning rally for Long Island with a base hit to left off reliever Stephen Penney (4-6) and took second on a sacrifice bunt by Puckett. Vega followed with a line drive single to left-center, and with Reyes rounding third, center fielder James Simmons unloaded a perfect one-hop throw to the plate, but Reyes dove in on a close play, scoring the go-ahead run. Lyons would later add an RBI groundout and Lew Ford provided one more on an RBI single to center.
Amalio Diaz notched his 14th save, issuing just a two-out walk to Simmons while striking out the side in the ninth.
Notes: The Revs fall to 23-13 in games decided in a team's final at-bat. Neil worked seven innings for the second straight start and has allowed a combined one earned run in those two starts, despite a pair of no-decisions. Edward Paredes stranded two runners, recording the final out in the top of the eighth out of the York bullpen, moving past Sean Stidfole for fourth in club history in appearances with his 129th. Nash had a six-game hitting streak snapped. Perez now has 50 RBI in his last 49 games. With Lancaster defeating Southern Maryland, the Revs fall to 4.5 games back in the Freedom Division's second half standings, as Lancaster lowered its magic number to one. Long Island clinched a postseason berth minutes after the game concluded when Somerset defeated Bridgeport, eliminating the Bluefish from second half contention in the Liberty Division. Revs lefty Rommie Lewis (9-10, 3.89) will face Ducks southpaw Joe Bircher (0-0, 17.18) on Wednesday night. It is Library Card Sign-Up Night at Santander Stadium. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
