Revs Drop Home Run Derby Contest At Long Island

The York Revolution used three home runs to build an early lead, but watched as the Long Island Ducks used three home runs to mount a comeback as the Revs fell 5-4 in their series opener in front of 4,561 fans at Bethpage Ballpark on Monday evening. The Revs will look to even things on Tuesday night when the four-game set continues.

Eric Patterson opened the scoring quickly in the top of the first inning, launching a two-run homer to right-center for an early 2-0 York lead. It marked the first time the Revs had scored in the first inning of a game since July 3 in Bridgeport.

Long Island got on the board with a two-out bloop RBI single to right-center by Jon Griffin in the bottom of the first, narrowing York's lead to 2-1. It followed a lengthy battle of foul balls from Griffin who picked up his 51st RBI of the year, second-most in the league.

Andres Perez led off the second with a solo homer to left, taking over the Revs' all-time lead in total bases (606), one day after setting a new franchise record for total hits. Yeicok Calderon followed with a line drive homer to right on the very next pitch, as the Revs put together their second set of back-to-back home runs on the season, building a 4-1 lead against Ducks starter John Brownell who had previously allowed just six home runs all season and had given up only three combined runs over his previous three starts.

Steve McQuail began the comeback for Long Island in the fourth, hammering a solo homer off the scoreboard structure in left-center, cutting the lead to 4-2. It was McQuail's fifth home run in as many starts with the Ducks.

York starter Rommie Lewis breezed through a quick 1-2-3 fifth inning, but making his second straight start on short rest, exited after issuing a leadoff walk to Cody Puckett in the bottom of the sixth. Randy Ruiz greeted reliever Beau Vaughan with a game-tying two-run homer to left-center, knotting the score at 4-4.

Ninth place hitter Dan Lyons connected on a solo homer to left-center off reliever Edward Paredes (1-1) to break the tie in the bottom of the seventh.

The Revs were poised to tie the game in the ninth as Ducks right fielder Bryan Sabatella missed a diving attempt on a Brandon Boggs line drive, misplaying it into a leadoff triple. Closer Ryan Kussmaul would not give in, striking out Bryan Pounds and retiring Perez on a broken bat popup. Following an intentional walk to Calderon, Kussmaul retired pinch-hitter Luis De La Cruz on a first pitch popup to notch his league-leading 23rd save, as the Revs lost a second straight one-run game in which they had placed the tying run at third with less than two outs in the ninth.

Nick Struck (3-2) earned the win out of the Long Island bullpen, striking out both batters faced in the seventh. Amalio Diaz struck out the side in order in the eighth, completing a string of five straight strikeouts by Ducks relievers.

York was unable to score after the second inning, as the offense also wasted a leadoff double by Pounds in the fourth. The Revs went a combined 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, while aside from the fourth and ninth innings, were retired in order from the third inning-on.

Lewis was charged with three runs over five innings, taking a no-decision.

Notes: Perez moved one past Scott Grimes who held the previous franchise record for total bases at 605. His home run marked the 41st of his Revs career, tying him with James Shanks for fourth on the all-time list. Patterson's home run was the 34th of his Revs career, matching Matt Esquivel for eighth-most. It was just the third first-inning homer for the Revs since May 21. Patterson was ejected by home plate umpire Fred DeJesus for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the eighth. Before allowing the tying run in the sixth, Vaughan had given up just two hits in seven scoreless innings over his previous six games. Before allowing the go-ahead run in the seventh, Paredes had allowed just one run in seven innings over his previous eight appearances in July. The York bullpen has allowed 35 home runs after allowing just 21 all of last season. Revs righty Shawn Hill (1-7, 4.39) returns to the York rotation on Tuesday night after helping Team Canada capture gold at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. Hill will face Ducks righty Bobby Blevins (1-1, 5.50) with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
