Revolution Unbeaten Streak Reaches 10 Games with 2-2 Draw vs. FC Cincinnati
July 3, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution (6-5-7; 25 pts.) played to a 2-2 draw with FC Cincinnati (7-7-4, 25 pts.) on Sunday night at Gillette Stadium behind goals from Dylan Borrero and Gustavo Bou. With the result, New England extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games in MLS play, the longest streak in MLS this season and tied for the third longest undefeated stretch in club history.
Borrero, making his fifth consecutive start, put the Revolution ahead in the 30th minute as the Colombian fired a left-footed shot into the far corner off a feed from Sebastian Lletget. Lletget, who had missed the last two games with an injury, picked up his fourth assist of the season on the play.
Cincinnati equalized 11 minutes later on a Henry Kessler own goal. Kessler made his return to the starting lineup for the first time since May 15 at Atlanta, playing 45 minutes on the night before being withdrawn at halftime for Jon Bell in a planned substitution.
In the second half, Emmanuel Boateng entered for an injured Borrero and yet again made an impact off the bench. The Ghanaian midfielder provided the cross on Gustavo Bou's fourth goal of the season, a glancing header to the back post. DeJuan Jones was credited with a second assist on the play - his fourth helper of the campaign.
Cincinnati nearly equalized in the 69th minute but was denied by a double save from Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrović. The Serbian saved the first shot, which deflected off defender Brandon Bye, before stopping a point-blank effort on the rebound to preserve the lead. Cincinnati's persistence paid off as the visitors capitalized on Revolution giveaway in the 73rd minute, leading to the tying goal by Brenner.
The Revolution embark on a three-game road swing beginning Saturday afternoon with their first regular season meeting against reigning MLS Cup champion New York City FC. The match at Yankee Stadium kicks off a 1:00 p.m. ET and airs nationally on Univision in Spanish, while streaming via Twitter in English. Saturday's contest also airs locally on the radio via 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio in Portuguese.
POSTGAME NOTES
New England Revolution 2, FC Cincinnati 2
July 3, 2022 - Gillette Stadium (Foxborough, Mass.)
TEAM NOTES
The Revolution extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games (4-0-6) dating back to April 30. The streak is tied for the third longest in club history, only one game shy of the club record (11 games - 2019 and 2005).
New England extended its home unbeaten streak to eight games across all competitions (4-0-4) dating back to April 16. This season, the Revolution are 6-2-4 overall and 4-2-4 in league play at Gillette Stadium.
The draw was the first in the all-time series with FC Cincinnati and extended New England's unbeaten run against the Orange and Blue to six games (5-0-1) across all competitions.
The Revolution have scored goals in 16 of their 18 matches, more often than any other team in MLS this season.
Bruce Arena made four changes to his Starting XI from last Sunday's match at Vancouver Whitecaps FC as Henry Kessler, Brandon Bye, Maciel, and Sebastian Lletget, start in place of Jon Bell, A.J. DeLaGarza, Tommy McNamara, and Arnór Traustason.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
Dylan Borrero scored the opening goal for New England - the second straight home game he has tallied for the Revolution. Borrero played 45 minutes and finished with three shots, two on target, and six duels won before being subbed off due to injury.
Sebastian Lletget returned from injury to make his 15th appearance of the campaign. The midfielder tallied his fourth assist of the season on New England's opening goal.
Gustavo Bou notched his 60th MLS start on Sunday, marking the occasion with his fourth goal of the season. For the second straight match, 'La Pantera' registered eight shots with three on target. Of his 33 goals, tonight's tally was only Bou's second headed goal with New England.
Emmanuel Boateng replaced the injured Dylan Borrero at halftime and tallied his seventh assist in a Revolution uniform, his third of the 2022 campaign. Boateng continues to lead MLS with 1.15 combined goals and assists per 90 minutes since signing with the Revolution in 2021.
DeJuan Jones was credited with a second assist on Bou's goal and now ranks second among MLS defenders in combined goals and assists since the start of 2020.
Henry Kessler also rejoined the Starting XI for the first time since May 15 at Atlanta United, playing 45 minutes, and completed 27 of his 28 passes.
Brandon Bye returned to the starting lineup after missing last weekend's game due to injury. The defender won six of his seven aerial duels and added a team-high seven recoveries, including three in the final third.
Carles Gil recorded team highs in chances created (3), duels won (8) and successful dribbles (4).

POSTGAME QUOTES: New England Revolution 2 vs. FC Cincinnati 2
Revolution Sporting Director & Head Coach Bruce Arena
On if tonight's result felt like two points dropped:
Arena: "Yeah."
On the FC Cincinnati's second goal and whether it could have been prevented:
Arena: "Well, every goal - you don't think the first goal can be prevented? Give Cincinnati credit. They pressured the ball. Djordje [Petrović] shouldn't have thrown the ball to [Damian] Rivera and Rivera did not do a good job, his first touch was really poor. But playing the ball into him under pressure at that point in the game, Cincinnati is smart. They're obviously pressing to try to get back in the game, and they did. Give them credit. They did a good job."
On if he was expecting Henry Kessler to play more than 45 minutes tonight as he returned from injury:
Arena: "No. We were only going to play him 45 minutes."
On Gustavo Bou's performances as the lone striker since Adam Buksa's departure:
Arena: "He [Bou] is doing fine. He scored a goal. That's what strikers are supposed to do, right? He held the ball up when necessary. He did a good job. He's not a perfect nine, but he does a solid job."
On what the team needs to work on as it heads into a stretch of three consecutive away games:
Arena: "Always a lot of things to work on. Obviously defending set pieces, you could say. Our finishing can be better, be a little cleaner in the final third of the field."
On Brandon Bye and Henry Kessler's performances tonight:
Arena: "I thought Brandon played a good 90 minutes. Henry, 45 minutes, obviously didn't do a good job on that corner, conceding an own goal. But it's going to take him a while. He's been out basically the whole season."
On whether he feels the team's recent draws are missed opportunities:
Arena: "You're painting a real gloomy picture here. I don't understand your point of view. Of course, we could've gotten three points. We haven't lost a game in 10 games, which is not the worst thing to happen. Could we get more three points? Yes. So, we have 16 more games remaining to get a little bit better, but we're not in the worst shape. We've been forced to redesign our team with some roster moves and all of that. It takes a little bit of time, but we've been doing okay."
On Dylan Borrero's status:
Arena: "We probably won't know until tomorrow or Tuesday."
On the trends of the season around the league thus far:
Arena: "Yes, it's a very odd season. The whole league is odd. There's probably 20 teams that can win their conferences. It's a classic MLS season. You win a couple games in a row and you're likely threatening to be in first place."
Revolution Midfielder Emmanuel Boateng
On being a constant threat off the bench:
Boateng: "I just want to play, so every chance that I get whether it's from the start or the bench, I just want to come out there and help the team. And we have good players on the team, so I just got to do my job, put the ball where you want it, and guys take care of business."
On his assist to Gustavo Bou:
Boateng: "The ball came out wide to me and a lot of guys know what I want to do - either back post or front post. So just looking at Gustavo's [Bou] run, he made a hard run to the first post and I just put it [there] and gave him a chance and unbelievable flick there for the goal."
On team's mentality through recent draws:
Boateng: "There's a lot of games that we could have won. The way that game ended, I feel like first of all that first goal is unfortunate to get; a flick on our own goal. And then the second goal I think we need to look at it. We made a few mistakes there just giving them that. But I think defensively we were solid, we just gave up two goals on our end and I think offensively we created some chances. We could have done better maybe getting a third goal and putting the game away. So guys are determined and big games coming up on the road. And we're going to go in and try to make it tough on them and get some points on the road."
On chemistry with new players heading into the second half:
Boateng: "I think we have enough guys on the team to still get the job done. And I think that the coaches have done well with some of the signings they've made. Djordje [Petrović] has been brilliant, Dylan [Borrero] is getting on and Jozy [Altidore] is playing well, too. He's getting opportunities, and I think at the right time he'll get his chance, put them away. He's been strong when he comes in for us. And everybody on the team, too, has been lifting their game and trying to play. So, I think we will be fine. We just need to set up some of these games that we are drawing; get a point. So just a few mistakes that we have to tweak here and there, and I think we'll be alright."
On the team's position in the standings:
Boateng: "We just have to keep pushing and cut down off mistakes and capitalize and on the other side and get some goals."
Revolution Defender Henry Kessler
On returning to the Starting XI:
Kessler: "Felt good. I was happy to get back out there, good 45 [minutes]. Unfortunate with the goal, obviously I'm disappointed with it. But yeah, it felt good to be back out there."
On exiting the match at halftime and progressing toward full strength:
Kessler: "Yeah, premeditated substitution. We talked about it before, we were going to get me 45 [minutes] and hope to build rather than throw me in there for 90 [minutes] immediately. It has been a hamstring and it's been something that's recurring. Gio Reyna's been dealing with it a lot, so it's not uncommon to have it be reinjured but that's what I've been dealing with."
On his mentality through battling injuries this season:
Kessler: "It's difficult. Mentally, obviously you always want to be out there, but it's just a lot of repetitive actions to try to improve yourself. You always want to be on the field and then just when you think you're out of the woods it happens again or you tweak it again. I'm hoping this is the final time."
On the recent draws through the team's 10-game unbeaten streak:
Kessler: "Yeah, so it's good, but it's not great. We'd obviously prefer wins, especially at home to get three points would be great, but it's been good to be unbeaten and stay out of the loss column. That's always a good thing. That being said, we want to win home games and away games, but especially the ones at home. Tonight's an example of that."
On staying connected to the team off the field:
Kessler: "Sometimes it's off the field stuff, whether it's like dinner or whatever, but when the team travels there's not a ton you can do. Maybe it's calling the guys when they're in the hotel, but sometimes you're removed- not necessarily by choice. We're always here, the injured guys, are always here watching the game for the home games. But trying to be in and around the locker room as much as possible even when injured."
On central defender Jon Bell's performances in the backline:
Kessler: "I think he's [Bell] great. We push each other. Obviously, he's been doing well- a clean sheet against Vancouver and a good performance today. It's a good relationship."
Revolution Midfielder Wilfrid Kaptoum
*Translated from Spanish*
On if he felt two points were dropped in tonight's match:
Kaptoum: "Well, it's clear that we could have won the game. Unfortunately, we had some shortcomings tonight, and that cost us three points. But we did get a point, and next week we can improve on this."
On what the team can do to start turning draws into wins:
Kaptoum: "Simply, just the details. Little details, and the little plays. We haven't really lost these games. We're working hard, we're working well. We're going to try to work on these moments and those situations, and be more attentive to the little details."
On Brandon Bye, Sebastian Lletget, and Henry Kessler returning from injuries:
Kaptoum: "They are three very important players for our team. I think now they're fully available and they're going to help us tremendously with the remainder of the season. "
On the turning point in tonight's match:
Kaptoum: "Well, I think it's just the details and the mistakes that we made. We made some big mistakes. We played consistently tonight on defense and in the attack, and we were aggressive; but we need to work on those little details."
On what makes Gustavo Bou a great player:
Kaptoum: "Well he's [Bou] an experienced player. He's just a difference maker. He moves well, he scores a lot, and he's prepared when he's on the field. He's just huge for us, and he's very confident and very energized right now."
On his role in the final minutes of the match when Maciel exited the contest:
Kaptoum: "As soccer players, we are prepared for any moment. We opted for that decision. I covered a lot of ground tonight, but we've done everything well. We've had few problems there and we created some chances to score goals."
