New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution will open group play in Leagues Cup 2023 on Saturday, July 22 against fellow MLS side New York Red Bulls. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Red Bull Arena on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. Callum Williams and Calen Carr will call the match in English, while Bruno Vain and Andres Agulla will provide Spanish commentary. Saturday's match can also be heard on the radio locally in Portuguese on 1260 AM Nossa Radio USA.
New England, second overall in the Supporters' Shield standings entering Leagues Cup, begins the tournament on the back of a 4-0 shutout victory over D.C. United last Saturday, improving to 9-0-3 at home in league play. Midfielder Ian Harkes, signed by New England in early July, recorded his first MLS brace in just his third appearance for the club. Another new summer acquisition, midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye, could see his first action with the club during the tournament.
Revolution captain Carles Gil guided the attack with his second multi-assist performance of the campaign, as the 2021 MLS MVP now leads the league with 12 assists as Leagues Cup kicks off. Gil became the third-fastest play in MLS history to reach 60 career helpers, joining Steve Ralston as the only players in club history to achieve the feat. The three-time All-Star's contributions have helped New England record the third most goals in MLS entering the break in league play.
Argentine forward Gustavo Bou netted his fifth goal of the season in the win over D.C., while Bobby Wood continued his resurgent campaign with his fifth assist on the year. Bou, who featured in LIGA MX for three seasons with Club Tijuana from 2017-19, owns 46 goals in the MLS regular season or playoffs since joining New England in July 2019, fourth most leaguewide during that four-year span. Bou has performed well against New York, tallying five goals and three assists in seven career meetings. New England leads the all-time series against the Red Bulls, 40-35-20, in all competitions.
Following Saturday's match, New England will return home to Foxborough to host LIGA MX side Atlético de San Luis on Wednesday, July 26 at Gillette Stadium. Both matches kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. New York and Atlético de San Luis then meet on July 30 to round out group play. The top two clubs in each group will advance into the knockout stages beginning with the Round of 32.
