POSTGAME QUOTES:
New England Revolution II 1 vs. Forward Madison FC 0
New England Revolution II Head Coach Clint Peay
On dissecting Forward Madison's defense:
Peay: "I thought it played out kind of the way I thought it would. They're a hard team to break down. I thought we'd have a decent amount off the ball, which we did. We were trying to probe and they made it tough. They do a good job of cutting down passing lanes and protecting the spaces behind, so all in all, it looked the way I thought it would, but we were just trying to find ways to penetrate them."
On Maciel and Michel playing together for the first time:
Peay: "Obviously, I think there's a comfort level between the two players. They've played together before at Botafogo. Maciel, for us, I think he provides a good presence in the midfield. He's calm, he's composed, he's able to move the ball into good places. He's intelligent with his movement so he helps us dictate tempo."
On the halftime message:
Peay: "I thought we needed to be a little bit more opportunistic. We thought we needed to put some more balls into the box and that's how we finally scored our goal. And we just needed to take care of the ball better, and though we were towards the end of the first half we were sloppy with our play. ¬Â
On the scoring play:
Peay: "Again, there was a moment I think Tico [Damian Rivera] was isolated, he tried to create something, maybe the shot was blocked, glanced off Noel [Buck]. Noel had the presence of mind to pick his head up and put a good ball into the box for some guys, and I think [Justin] Rennicks got a little diving head on it and forced the keeper to make a good save and [Edward] Kizza was, as you would want in a forward, very opportunistic, on the prowl and was there to put the ball in back on that first [goal]."
On having six 1-0 wins this season:
Peay: "Goals are hard to come by in certain games and this was one of them. And when you get that lead, you got to make sure you protect it. And at this point in the season, games are going to be tight. We know that and so I think for our guys it was do what you had to do defensively to get the result."
On the team's defensive mindset:
Peay: "Again, I think there's urgency about us. There's an understanding of what's at stake, and I'll go back to the North Carolina game [on Sept. 11] which I think we were all pretty disappointed in. I think that was a wakeup call for everybody. ¬Â
New England Revolution II Defender Colby Quiñones
On what he's learned this season with competition for minutes at right back:
Quiñones: "Yeah, this year has been challenging. I think you have to come in every day with a good attitude, no matter if you've been playing or if you haven't been playing, and just try to get better every day and ask a lot of questions. I think, to get on the field to get on the starting 11, you need to be engaged, you need to show the coaches that you really want to be here, and just keep working every day. Whether you're starting or not, just keep getting better every day and you'll slowly improve."
On growing into the match after coming off the bench early:
Quiñones: "It was tough. It was very early in the game. Unfortunately, Connor [Presley] went down and as soon as I saw him, I got immediately right up. Mentally, I think I was ready to come into the game. Physically, I had to grow into the game a little bit. I needed to make sure I can get my runs in so I didn't pull anything, but I think if you're a sub, if you can be mentally in it, you can come into a game at any minute."
On Forward Madison's shifting formation:
Quiñones: "Yeah, they defended well. It was hard to break them down. But I think we, at times, were sloppy with the ball. As soon as we got our groove and kept the ball and slowly started penetrating them, it was going to come and the goal was going to come."
On the team's defensive mindset:
Quiñones: "Collectively, we know after the North Carolina game [on Sept. 11], we got put in check, and if you don't give your all defensively then you won't be playing. We've just kind of had that mentality. Now, as a group, in order to win games, in order to move up in the rankings, you have to defend."
