New England Revolution News Release
Foxborough, Mass. -- The New England Revolution announced today that the team will host the storied Scottish soccer team Celtic Football Club at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday July 19 in a match between the 2005 MLS Eastern Conference Champions and the 2005-06 Scottish Premier League titleholders.
Legendary Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane, Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura, Bulgarian midfielder Stilian Petrov, Ireland international Aiden McGeady and Scotland striker Shaun Maloney are among the star international players scheduled to appear for the Bhoys (Pron. "Boys"), as Celtic are known to their faithful around the world.
"This is a terrific match for Gillette Stadium with great appeal," said Sunil Gulati, President of Kraft Soccer. "Celtic is a traditional club powerhouse with top talent and a loyal following. This game will be a great test for our team against a strong opponent."
Celtic, founded in 1887, boasts 40 Scottish league championships, including this year's triumph, as well as 33 Scottish Cup titles. Part of the "Old Firm" of Scottish Football, Celtic remains the only club from Scotland to win the European Cup, the prestigious competition now known as the UEFA Champions League. Frequent participants in the Champions League, Celtic again qualified for the upcoming 2006-07 tournament.
Celtic's faithful followers made a positive impression on the world soccer community in 2003 when Celtic played in the UEFA Cup final in Seville, Spain. An estimate 120,000 Celtic fans arrived in Spain wearing the team's colors of green and white and displayed such exemplary passion and good behavior, despite losing 3-2 to FC Porto in the match itself, that Celtic received the 2003 Fair Play awards from both UEFA and FIFA.
New England, a hotbed of Celtic support in the U.S., boasts no fewer than five supporters clubs, including chapters in Boston, Quincy, Allston/Brighton, Nantucket and Connecticut, as well as several others throughout the Northeastern United States and Canada.
