DENVER, CO (May 31, 2006) - The Colorado Rapids rode a goal from Dedi Ben-Dayan and a shutout from Bouna Coundoul for a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy tonight at INVESCO Field at Mile High. The win sent the Rapids to second place in the Western Conference tied with Houston Dynamo.
The shutout was Coundoul's second straight against the defending MLS Champions and second in three starts.
Terry Cooke had the first scoring chance of the evening when his 30-yard attempt went wide in the fourth minute.
The Rapids almost scored first through the foot of Dedi Ben-Dayan in the 16th minute. Eric Denton was given acres of space down the left sideline and dribbled over half the field before cutting the ball back to the Israeli midfielder, who shot high and wide.
Goalkeeper Steve Cronin had to make his first save of the match in the 32nd minute. Ben-Dayan made a tackle to win the ball, got up, dribbled into the penalty area and unleashed a shot that Cronin tipped over the cross bar.
Ben-Dayan finally found the back of the net when he scored his first goal of the season in the 33rd minute off a corner kick. Cooke put in a ball to the far side of the six-yard box and the Israeli stuck his foot in front of Todd Dunivant and deflected the ball into the back of the net. Cooke's assist was his sixth of the year and added to the Englishman's league leading total.
Coundoul made his biggest save in the 88th minute when a Galaxy corner kick was turned into a near own goal as the ball bounced off defender Mike Petke before Coundoul smothered it.
The Rapids' have another short turnaround as they play in their third game in 11 days on Saturday, June 3 when they travel to the Home Depot Center to take on Chivas USA at 8 p.m. MT.
