Bradenton Marauders News Release
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Marauders ended a five-game losing streak Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 win over the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels at LECOM Park.
The win helped the Marauders (20-25) avoid a series sweep.
Left-hander Jake Sweeney (1-0) made a spot start for Bradenton and pitched a career-high five innings, limiting the Mighty Mussels (30-14) to one run on three hits while striking out four.
Fort Myers manufactured a run in the first inning, when Noah Miller lined a one-out single, stole second base, and scored on a single by Noah Cardnas. But Sweeney went on to retire the next nine straight batters, and stranded a runner on first base in both the fourth and fifth innings.
The Mussels' 1-0 lead held up until the bottom of the third, when starter Travis Adams (3-1) suffered an abrupt bout of wildness. The right-hander had retired the first six batters of his outing but issued a leadoff walk in the third to Alexander Mojica, and after two outs, allowed free passes to Sergio Campana and Brenden Dixon to load the bases. Rodolfo Nolasco took advantage, lining a two-run single to center field to give the Marauders a 2-1 advantage, their first lead of the series.
Nolasco's base hit extended his on-base streak to nine consecutive games, the team's longest active streak.
Reliever Malik Barrington pitched the fifth for Fort Myers, where Deivis Nadal laid down a two-out bunt single and Campana drove a two-run homer, his first of the season, into the left field bleachers to stretch Bradenton's lead to 4-1.
Rehabbing Pirates right-hander Nick Mears pitched a scoreless sixth behind Sweeney, and Yunior Thibo turned in a clean seventh. But in the eighth, left-hander Denny Roman encountered trouble. After a strikeout to begin the inning, Dylan Neuse reached on a fielding error by second baseman Mike Jarvis, and after a flyout, rehabber Tim Beckham drove a long RBI-single off the wall in right field, scoring Neuse and trimming the Marauders' lead to two. Cardenas followed with another single, and Roman gave way to righty Johan Montero, who walked Keoni Cavaco to load the bases. But Kala'i Rosario grounded into a fielder's choice, ending the inning with the lead intact.
The Marauders were unable to capitalize on a Jase Bowen leadoff single and a two-out walk by Mojica in the eighth, but Montero returned to pitch a perfect ninth inning with the help of a diving catch by Nadal at shortstop, which robbed the Mussels' Kyle Schmidt of a leadoff single on a hard liner.
The Marauders travel to Lakeland on Tuesday to open a six-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, Single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Publix Field.
